Red head lamps

At our Kulnura get together, everyone except me had one of those red head lamp thingies. Where did you guys get them from and what were the damages? I'm curious because I saw one at Coles(!!!) of all places, for about $33. It was Everyready and had a red and a white lamp with a switch that toggled to each from a central OFF position.

I was tempted to grab one then and there, but thought I'd ask first!

Thanks frog! How's the grenade going, by the way? I see it's now part of your sig!
Yeah Tony, kinda. More like a head-band with a torch attached! I thought $33 was a bit much!

I made a RED LED for my Petzel head lamp years ago, it's still going strong.

1) smash a spare globe.
2) clear out the glass from the screw base
3) solder a 10mm high brightness red LED and resistor into the base
4) affix LED to base with 5 minute araldite.

It would probably be easier to buy one nowadays.

I saw the energiser one at Coles too, looked good. I have a bushwalking head torch and they're great, so comfortable and practical. The only thing that put me off the Energiser one was the AAA batteries, but if you buy them in bulk from an office supplier they're not that expensive.

Them's mean looking mothers, anthony! And with the price rise, think I might go with Coles. The Coles ones don't have as many LED's, so I figure the batteries will last longer and they should be a bit dimmer. Thanks heaps guys!

It takes me about 10 mins to make a red LED globe conversion. Have sold heaps to our members. Normal 2 cell, 'Big Jim' & 'Dolphin' types. L.

I use the energizer headlamp (bought from Coles), though sometimes I think the red is a bit bright. I need to cover it over with some red tape or something I think.

I found them at my local Coles, but I haven't looked at any other stores.. plus, they're not even available at my local Coles anymore.. So it's a bit of guesswork I reckon.

Perhaps you could ask them to get one in? Or maybe they sell them at dick smith or similar.

They are definitely a great idea, keeping the hands free when packing/unpacking, reading charts, writing notes etc.
