Got Stung at Aus't Post

I bought a box from Aust' Post this morning ... it weighted 550g ... cost me $4.25 .... that's alright I reckon ....

I came back later with a Dew Shield and a finder Scope Bracket in the said box.

I put it on the scales at the Post Office .... it then weighted 1.8kg all up.

That's good I thought ... should be reasonable for the costs of Posting at that weight and a small extra charge for ' sig ' on arrival

Then the staff member asks for .... .... $40.25 .....
You will be charged for an 8kg item

Whaaaaaaaaat .... but it only weights 1.8kg

He replied .... we charge by the size of the Box .... not buy weight.
We always charge which ever is the ' greatest ' .... the box size or the weight...

What a rip off ..... you could have carried the box with your ' little ' finger '

Unfortunately yes otherwise you'd be able to ship two cubic meters of feathers for the same weight as a small box of ball bearings. Where does it fit in the delivery van? Maybe on Houghy trailer, yeah....

Yea it is wrong but true,the normal postal bags range from 500 grams and the next is 3kg. and upward
So if one has a gift to send and it weighs 495 grams all good, but if it weighs 550 grams you pay for the 3 kg bag, which is much more expensive.
You would reckon it would go up in 500 grams at a time

Hi Col,

For future reference, to determine the cubic weight, calculate the
volume of the parcel in cubic metres, using the external dimensions of
the box, and multiply that number by 250.

Applies to domestic post only. International post is based on actual weight.

I keep a careful eye on Post offices, most are franchises and unfortunately some are unscrupulous. I was charged around $15 to post a package in a box that I had received a similar weight item in. The cost of the postage when I received was under $5. HRH had been similarly ripped off at the same PO. Needless to say we don't use that particula PO any longer. From memory there is a shipping calculator on the AusPost website.

Hi Geoff,

Officially, for anything over 1kg posted domestically the postage is calculated
by either the actual weight or the cubic weight, whichever is the greater.

The post office also reserves the right to charge by cubic weight for anything
under 1 kg, if it is large or irregular or cylindrical in shape.

So unfortunately for the old trick of turning up at the post office with a helium
filled balloon and arguing that they should pay you because it weighs a
negative amount, they have their bases covered.

Yes , I had the same BS lately and the women behind the counter was really good and said ' This is not common knowledge but if I put my box that was going to cost $27 into one of these here Red post satchel for $1.32c it will only cost me $11.00 ' .
I payed the extra $1.32c and saved $16 , go figure. This information is not told to us , the unwashed public.

Next time any of us post items that fall outside the cut off weight when it gets silly expensive. , ask for a Red Satchel post bag and play the dick,s at their own game.

+1 to what Brian said - all the Aus Post employees I have EVER dealt with offer to put it in the bag to save money. Most recent example from a small Mum and Dad Canberra outlet saved me $18.

Stupid thing is, you don't even unbox the item - just put the box in the bag. Makes NIL sense, but just go with the flow...flow with the go...

I have an Auspost contract with eParcel. They gave me a cubic ratio of 128, not the regular 250. And even better, I don't have to supply cubic measurements, because they only charge me on the weight!

I know it's factored in there somewhere, but it is a whole lot less work for me, with 50 parcels per day.

I had an eyepiece delivered today via , throw over the thief proof front gate .

5 feet 6 inches onto solid concrete , thanks Joe for the good boxing up

So Guys the best way to post is wrap it and bag it, I sent a Camera Body to a fellow that way once, it was Bubble Wrapped, it was safe and arrived unharmed.

If you can shove it into the bag it will arrive at the cheapest price.

I find all the time I get charged for size rather than weight when sending light boxes, they are so light in fact they usually weigh much less than the carton. Easy to calculate, as AP has a calculator and you feed in the dimensions, weight, from and to postcode and it comes out spot on. You can add for tracking and insurance.
That is why freight is a large component when sending my light boxes, especially for the larger ones.

Peter it is volume not necessarily the weight that a Post Office looks at, if you can shove that same item in one of their bags you will save.
