Here we have classic M42, the "Kraft cheese" of Nebulas.
So named because everyone has one or wants to have one and it's a time honoured rite of passage in AP.
Neverless, in spite of there being 35,000+ versions of this thing on the web, I havn't attempted this with my current gear, and it's big, bold and beautiful so heck, why not?
I'm going to attempt to do my usual subtle NB take on it
Lots of dust (& gas thx Mike) up there, hoping to get 20+ hrs on it if the weather gods permit.
Here's a sneak preview WIP just 6 hrs of 5nm Ha so far, taken from my backyard in Melbourne, Australia.
Thanks for looking, Cheers
Andy

Reason: typos
I agree gotta do one of these (or several) in an imaging career ... bring on the Andification!
Oh and by the way, a common misnomer used when imaging through a Ha filter.. it is not "dust" you see there, it is gas, in fact ionised excited Hydrogen to be specific, so ain't no dust in this image
Nice wide FOV, Andy. Look forward to your reinterpretation of this classic object
Cheers Rick

Mike
If that's all gas then it must be like "Blazing Saddles" up there, all those green Orion folks eating beans ....
Machine guns ready to roll! Wonderfully three-dimensional, wonderfully deep. A rare thing: an image that shows the faint stuff while still giving a really good feeling for the main structure.
Andy, that looks great, such detail.
Your interpretational be interesting to say the least but it would be nice also to see your version in HaRGB.
Thanks George, In my suburban location RGB is really not an option - but if it's clear on the weekend I may be able to get away to a dark site. Pretty keen to do NB on this one though

Cheers JA, I too was surprised by how much detail the 1800 sec subs revealed

Thanks Greg, There's a few VERY nice HaRGB versions out there, but not so very many in NB, fingers crossed I can get a result

Cheers M&T, 6hrs of 1800 sec subs, 30mins of 300sec subs and just 6 mins of 60sec subs were individually stacked in Startools.
Then combined in PS using layers/masks, and finessed with NIK SilverFX pro.
Still lots of work ahead methinks

Could be Peter, I'll leave it to the science experts here to decide.

Cheers Suavi, Colin & Tim, I really appreciate your encouragement. Hopefully a sign of good things to follow this summer, it's been such a lousy winter for AP

Beat me to it Andy, Orion just screams for the NB treatment! Even a short test last year with the Sony and Ha revealed the whole region to be full of GAS,, a bit like me. Look forward to deeing the final result, detailed already.

Hubba hubba ...watch them though, untrustworthy green wenches.....you'll find them hard to restist...
How good is Blazing Saddles though??, that beans around the campfire scene was just the ticket for a pre-pubescent boy, rewound the VHS several times and laughed uncontrollably...not quite as funny now I am all growed up though
