Well folks, while this is the first time capturing Orion's fish mouth for me, I don't expect it will be the last this season

Ed and I braved the moody sky at Mt Blackheath last night and after some experimentation managed to eek a few 1 minute subs out of the rig before the Sun came up

Canon 1100D unmodded attached to C8 Edge HD + 0.7x reducer unguided on an EQ6.

This is a combination of 5 subs at ISO100, 8 subs at ISO 400 and 3 subs at ISO1600...25 were taken in all but I had to chuck the rest because of star trails I need to sort my guiding out! Also a first for me, it features not only lights, darks and biases, but also flats collected at source

The outer layer in particular is quite noisy, coming from only 3 subs and seeing an aggressive curve so I'll look forward to getting some more subs to improve this later. I could probably use a little wider field but I don't have an in-between scope just yet.

This is my first concoction with funky layers, and as always, suggestions as to how to handle them or anything else welcomed! Maybe I haven't stretched the ISO400 layer enough

It looks to be in reasonable proportion, other than the core being a bit desaturated.

I'm shooting M42 in dribs and drabs at the moment. Might have something to show for it in 6 months time...

enticing. Hmmm to awaken at 4am again for Orion or wait till summer months when I can get it at a reasonable hour?

I like! Can't wait to image her soon. How long were your subs? maybe try a few at 10 secs just for the core?

OK thanks - I'll take a look at the core - it's mostly white in my subs though

well I'd travelled for 2 hours out of the city and the clouds just teased us until about midnight, so I wasn't giving up easily had a beautiful sunrise too.

The subs were 1 minute long. Will definitely try much shorter subs next time, and lots of them too. The total was 16 minutes of lights, and obviously I need more especially around the fainter outer regions, but I was pretty floored when I saw the first ISO1600 sub on the camera screen

Nice job Dunk; strange about the white subs though, with an unmodded
camera and short 10-20 sec subs, the core should be a bright green/blue
if looked at through the viewfinder, as in the attached sub.
15 secs @ ISO400. Straight from the camera.

Definitely not purple, and only a touch of green if I dial the saturation all the way up

OK, so I've gone back to look at the raw files...looks like it either dissipated in the stacking or I've lost it when stretching out the reds, as there's a green hue in the core at each ISO

Interesting that at the same ISO, and with the same model camera, your image shows a paler green. Mine is a JPEG; if yours is CR2, maybe there
is some difference in the outut of the two file types.

Yeah I have to wonder what processing the camera is doing to get the jpeg...my personal preference is to use raws instead and then at least I have more control over the data going forwards...constantly learning and maybe someday when I'm have a little competency I might go back and revisit some old data! But most of it is crap tbh as I'm also trying to learn my aligning and setup techniques too

My old brain is tired of converting files so that various software can use
them. I'm quite happy to accept that raw is better, but I just take the easy route, just the same as I don't use separate darks, I'm happy to let the camera do it's thing by enabling the two noise reduction features.
