NGC 288 and NGC 253

Globular cluster NGC 288 and spiral galaxy NGC 253 (the Silver Coin Galaxy) seen together in the southern constellation of Sculptor. In reality these two beautiful objects are vastly separated in distance with NGC 288 being about 30,000 light-years away and containing 45M solar-masses of stars, while the NGC 253 lies 11.4M light years away and weighs in a ~100M solar masses.

Captured 5th August 2014 with AT65-EDQ scope and Nikon D5100 at ISO 800 with IDAS light pollution filter, on HEQ5 mount. 137x 50-second sub-exposures. Total exposure time 1 hour 50 mins. Corrected with 53 flats and 118 bias images. Processed in DSS, post-processing in Adobe Photoshop. Slightly cropped.

Lovely Cam I do like nice wide field shots, such a sense of scale. But what detail in there though

Nice pairing Cam. The little cluster often gets overlooked.

Hi Cam,

This is a great shot - I really like the wide field shots which show the relative scale of multiple objects.

Cheers,
Mark

Thanks all.
I've still got a long way to go. My polar alignment was shocking that night (hence the short subs) and of course the sooner I can escape all the light pollution, the better.
Cheers,
Cam
