Was coming home from work yesterday,and stopped at shops,bought the July issue 'Sporting Shooter',and while reading,came to their photo comp section-and there was a photo I'd sent in months ago,and forgot about.
It won first prize-a .223 rifle and scope-over 1 K's worth,so that was a welcome surprise! As a full time invasive alien creature manager for the government this is a perfect tool for use at work.The comp was not a chance comp-the image had to be of a high standard and composition,so lugging all that L series gear and tripods around the bush is worth it

I tried to take my .44 magnum into work for 2 decades but the bosses thought it might be a controversial look compared to the Glock17s
yeah the job title is a whopper-can just imagine Sir Humphery Appleby coming out with a term like that.
I've tried to get my government boss to come out with me in the field,but no joy she seems to like the office better.
There is a serious problem with feral animals,the govt has allocated 5.2 M next financial year,we are unsure of the guidelines of how that is to be spent,but all involved are keen to see more of the work,myself and 4 other trappers completed in South Burnett Shire.In 4 weeks we trapped/shot, 47 wild dogs,53 wild pigs,10 foxes,5 feral cats.
I personally got 13 dogs,2 foxes,3 pigs,2 cats.My best day was when I used an audio decoy and had 3 wild dogs come up to me,in a perfect attacking formation-was really good to see the lead dog so close-at 15 m death was quick with a .270,I cleaned his two mates the following day.

The mutts are not a problem for us though - they don't come within cooee of us. But they are most common down the far end of the runway away from where human activity happens. An early morning inspection of the dirt showed very fresh tracks made only hours/moments earlier. A lot of track, and by several individual animals.
Might try rousing them next time I'm up there by howling and see what sort of reaction I get. They're suckers for that old chestnut!

Try some remote activated cameras-these are really a great tool,there is a mob in Sydney selling them through ebay-the model is Scout Guard 560K about $200 of all the cheaper ones I use these are the best.
RE-dressing in black-no,but I think a photo shoot like that with my new black stocked and stainless barrel .223 might be in order
The feral animal problem is really getting out of control - everywhere.
Bandicoots have been extincted in just the last generation in my area, the antechinus mouse is heading that way (haven't seen one for 9 years), last Echidna I sighted was about 7 years ago
All the small mammals get exterminated first - they are just being decimated every day - it saddens me.
Contrast that to the last 2 foxes sighted - only last week, feral cats and various other ferals everywhere
We even have feral goats within 2kms of the suburbs of Adelaide - less than 10kms from the centre of the CBD !
I counted (by approximation of mobs) 2500 goats just off along the Barrier highway earlier this year in just 4 hours !
But its not just in the outback, even the Alpine National Park is full of wild dogs these days - its probably only a matter of time before a pack of them chews up some innocent bushwalker.
My last bushwalk through was almost scary.
There are big properties in western NSW that actively harvest feral goats to ship to markets overseas. Tens of thousands of animals are removed this way every year. Much the same way like feral camels are also harvested and shipped overseas. Oddly very few people outside of rural NSW know about this.
Thing is, I also don't mind a bit of feral goat, pig and bunny on the end of my fork... yum...

A big fan of that caliber , I've had a few .222 , .223 , 22-250
The 223 was a Leader mk5 and my shotgun was a Franchi PA8 the government didn't like them .

Thanks David.Yes-had ywo .222 for years,just went 'up' and got a .270 a couple of months ago-seems the go for deer.
Yes Alex,foxes and cats do awful damage-try one of those SG 560 K trail cams -about $200 from ebay.Here is some images from today's cam.
