Double Bow

Murphy's Haystacks, South Australia.

I did a road trip from Perth to Melbourne and back last month and stopped at a few nice spots along the way. The Haystacks were clouded out first leg, but conditions were great 2nd time round with a thin layer of fog appearing an hour after Moonrise. Amazing light... it was hard to know where to point the camera!

Multi-frame pano with Canon 6D + Nikon 14-24.

Thanks Ron. It almost didn't happen.. I was tossing up whether to stay one extra night at Lake Gardiner or the Haystacks. Last minute change of mind

Brilliant.
The fog makes the rocks look crystal clear and the sky blurry - great depth of field look.

Beautiful depth of field.

I employ this technique to wedding photography for one shot each wedding. Sometimes it works, other times, not so much.

Thanks Mike, H. Interestingly, in the full screen view the background appears much sharper because the star cores are resolved. Only from a distance or at reduced scale does it look blurry.

Colin this is such a beautiful photograph!

As mentioned above the depth of field is excellent. As I stare at the haystacks my eyes start to make out the difused Milky Way background, it feels 3d. It's Magical

Outstanding work Colin. Choosing these conditions gave you the best of both worlds - crisp foreground against what appears to be a soft background, only to reveal sharp stars as you look closer. Excellent viewing dynamics! And great capture of the fog bow.

Brilliant as always. The square crop is certainly different to the norm with Milky Way panos but works in this case.

Only my 2nd or 3rd square crop Greg. I have a couple of other panos from other angles, but this one works best with fog bow directly below MW. A bit further left is better for the full wide angle MW shot.

Very surreal scene. The rocks look like giant mushrooms and the Milky Way like a dream. Perhaps a scene out of "Alice in Wonderland"!

Nice work, something different.

Greg.

I was hoping you had also done some a bit further to the left with the Haystacks directly under the Milky Waybow.

Cool, I have thought about this place before myself. Now I know. Very cool effect with the fog.
