Southern Cross Hanging over the Bungle Bungles

I was browsing through my raw files from the Kimberley's, trying to find any I hadn't finished processing yet, and came across this nightscape that I hadn't finished. What a score! I thought I'd finished all the nightscapes from the Kimberley's

This is a single frame from a star trails image, with the Southern Cross hanging over the Bungle Bungles.

Canon 40D, 17-40mm lens @ 17mm, f/4.0, 60s exposure, ISO1000.

- Large

I guess this image shows that even with a 40D at ISO1000 and a f/4 lens, you can still capture nightscapes when there's a nice moon lighting up the foreground and a nice dark sky like out in the Kimberley's

Thanks for looking.

That is an excellent shot Mike.
Those stats confuse me.
60 seconds @ 17mm?
I would have thought that there should be movement in the stars at that long an exposure?

saw this this morning.....

There is star trailing in the full version, but when it's resized for web it's just not noticeable.

And don't forget that's on a crop camera! So the 17mm is more like 27mm.

Also because I was pointing South, you can get away with longer exposures (without trails) than you can while pointing east or west.

Another great image, Mike. And congrats with being featured on Public Transport, that must be the first astro-landscape featured there!

Cheers,
Alex
