Nifty Fifty

Finally picked up the El Cheapo Canon 50mm f/1.8 from ebay for $90. It's so light and flimsy that I honestly wasn't sure it was going to live up to it's name. Took a series of 10 sec exposures at f/2.8 to stack when time permits. Meanwhile here's a single light frame stretched and contrast adjusted.

Thanks for your feedback Matt

Yep just a lens, it's definately value for money, should fit any Canon DSLR. I found heaps of them on ebay and gumtree.

Hi Carlos,

A 50mm lens has an ideal FOV for wide field astro photos, especially if you can mount your camera on an eq mount and track.

That way you can shoot at F2.8 and F4 which is where the lens performs at its best.

Good luck.

Ross.

Nice shot Carlos, I have the nifty fifty but hadn't used it for astro work. I found it too hard to manually focus with its ring (but that was before I had a camera with live view focusing) Will need to bring it along with me on my next night outing
