Some more Lemmon

Here's 20x5min I did with a QHY8 and a Pentax SMC -M 100mm. I also did a small time lapse with a SONY NEX-5 and 200mm Pentax SMC-M lens which I'm still working on.

I did two stacks for the composite. One with the stars stacked and rejected the comet nucleus, the other with the comet nucleus and rejected the star trails. I then blended the two in Photoshop in two layers as lighten mode. It's the short story but it turned out to be very difficult to process because of gradients, trees, noise and this thing turned out to be fairly faint after all. Its tail anyway.

I have a high resolution version here.
Hope you enjoy it - as always thanks for looking.

Great result Marc. You've merged the two very nicely. Were they done with Deep Sky Stacker or Nebulosity (or something else)?

I have a sequence from the same night but with high cloud/smoke haze the gradients are killing me.

If you have Lightroom, under Lens Corrections you can do a really nice job of removing the purple halos around the stars.

Hi Marc,

Great looking comet photo.

Nice detail in the tail, near the head.

Love the way the tail extends to the SMC.

Ross.

Thanks Phil. I didn't know Lens Correction got rid of chromatic aberrations. Good to know. I tried a lot of different things to stack. First did the starfield with the cluster and the SMC in CCD Stack then tried to do the comet in MAXIM DL. The starfield was always easy but the comet subs were a challenge because of all the star trails. SD-mask in MAXIM I think is more suited for longer FL shots where there are less stars and they don't overlap as much. In widefield you end up with a massive startrail pic. Not a problem for the nucleus but a real nuisance to extract the tail from the mess. In the end I did the comet in a program developed by a mate of mine called Goodlook. He just showed me and stacked it for me.

Thanks Ross. Yeah the tail goes on for ever. Very faint though which is a shame. The comet as a real nice color.

Thanks Rick. Gotta say it quick though. It was clear from sunset to about 1:00am and that's when I lost it in the trees anyway.

Thanks Rolf. I want to try something at longer FL like what you need next time I'm out. And guide on the comet this time.

A super result Marc, very impressive in that field. Must admit to not really paying much attention to this comet, has been a lot of other stuff happening for me of late.

Well done.
Regards
Trevor

Thanks Trevor. I'd like to go out get some more but the weather in Sydney is soooo bad at the moment. Somebody left the tap open. Shocking.

Superb Marc - hadn't thought of using the lenses. D'oh!
No clear skies here of late either.
