Few breaks today. Trying some mosaics. The stars in the background are hiding a few sins. AR1678 may have passed over the limb but is still having a bit of a spit.

Brilliant. This may be a silly question, but how do you get such detail in the pictures?

Hi Russ,
There is no one single thing that makes it happen.
The right camera for H-Alpha is No 1. Aperture is as big as you can afford. I use a 90mm solarMax filter on a 130mm Vixen. I believe the mount must be really good and well polar alined. I use a HEQ6 Pro. Your computer has to be setup so you can see the image and you really must be comfortable. Being well organised with your equipment and accessories is also a must.
Have a look at the sun and decide what you will photograph and stick to it. Once completed you can experiment. All settings must be recorded or it will windup a shambles.
Then you have the conditions to contend with. Once you have all that covered it is a matter of learning the appropriate setting for your capture. After all that comes sorting the raw footage in to an image. I use Registax6, Photoshop CS6, Imerge, Astra Image and various others at times.
I kid you not I learn things every time I make an image and without a doubt have a long way to go in the learning curve.
I am happy to share what little I have learned if I am not flying I am usually not far from the telescope and computer.
Feel free to ask, if I can I will help.

Ralph.
