Tassie Aurora

I took the boat across to Tassie with my wife a couple of weeks ago, to re-connect after more than a month on the road post eclipse. I was under strict instructions to limit camera use, so fortunately 5 out of the 8 nights were cloudy. On the 3 clear(ish) nights I snuck out and setup a camera for all night timelapse, in the hope of grabbing some aurora. Luckily, it showed up Fairly low level activity, but very cool after many failed attempts from mainland Oz.

2 of the nights were from the southern tip of the Tasman Peninsular. In retrospect, I think that was a bit far south/east. Clouds scoot around the south of Tas and head north just missing or clipping the peninsular. Next time I'll try further inland, south of Hobart.

What is the straight line heading straight up from the left of Scorpius in the first picture ?
There is a small dint in the cloud and it is to the right of it near the horizon.

Very nice views there Colin. I am checking out the best areas of Tassie for aurora late summer. Seems the area around Ross is the driest, so may be a possibility. All the best.

Beautiful images,Colin. Makes me want to go down there again. I've had spent lots of happy nights exploring dark skies on various holidays on the Tassie East Coast. What was your set up?

I'm heading back in Autumn hopefully. I'll base myself in the same general area as last time, which was south of Hobart along the Channel Hwy and over on Bruny Island I think.

Is there an external link that I can use to do a FB post so all my Tasmanian friends can see them.
The last time I pointed them at one of your aurora pics they were out enthusiastically searching the skies :-) Be nice to give them an idea of what to look for.

Thanks Ron. I think it's an aurora curtain. That section had the best activity of all 3 nights.

Thanks Lester. The trick is to avoid the Hobart light dome. So south, but not too far south to pick up the cloud scooting along the base of Tassie. Good luck and hope the Sun fires up for you. Look forward to seeing your pics.

Thanks Graeme. Most of the shots were done at 14-20mm, 5dmkII, iso3200, f/2.8, 30s.
