depends how long your exposures are going to be. I've seen plenty of good shots with a nifty 50, 50mm f1.8 (although needs to be stopped down a bit) and they're only about $80-120.

Hi Daniel,

I don't know anything about the use for astro work, others waaaay ahead of me here and I'm sure you'll get some great advice. But, as for value for money this site has some wonderful deals, I've used them often and they are very prompt with delivery. http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.co...ategory1_1.htm

That lens is the kit lens on the 7D, I think. A friend of mine has it and it's a good lens, very sharp, f4.5 is a bit slow though for shooting the stars.
I would add a +1 for the Canon nifty fifty (50mm f1.8), it's cheap and if you stop it down to f2.8 it's sharp.

Ill check out that site, I’m going to try and find someone in family that will swap me cash for the voucher. More options but boy it gets expensive, with the 10mm f1.2 O_O be nice tho.

Thanks I didn’t know that. I’m going to revaluate and try and get a fast 10mm if the wife lets me

If you're looking for a wide lens for an aps-c sized sensor(?) then I would recommend the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8. A friend of mine has it on his 7D and it's way sharper (and faster) than either the Canon 10-22 or the Sigma 10-20, which I thought were VERY soft unless stopped down significantly. It's almost as good as my 16-35L on my 5DmkII.

Thats correct aps-c size sensor on the 550d...Thank you, its info like this that can save me learning the hard way I'm now on the hunt, looks like it might just be in my price range. But its hard to put a price tag on a life long hobby

Thanks Hugh.

Here are some links that might help.

Cheaper (imported) lenses:

This website lets you compare lens quality side by side:
