New here and looking for a place to observe...

Hi everyone,

Let me first introduce myself. I'm Koen van Gorp from Belgium and got into astronomy when I was about 12, which is about 20 years ago . My main interests are cosmology, visual observing and astrophotography, but extend to about anything connected to science and technology. The last 8 years my focus has been mainly on astrophotography. I put my results on my website ( http://www.koenvangorp.be ).

In November we, my girlfriend, a friend and I, will be travelling to Australia for, as you might have guess, the eclipse and sight seeing. It will be the first time in the southern hemisphere for two of us and we would like to spend some time gazing at the night sky. Since we'll be travelling by plane, we're unable to bring a telescope.

We are looking for an opportunity to look through or if possible use/rent a telescope to see the wonders of the southern skies. Does anyone know of possible locations or contacts where we may able to do this?

To give you an idea of our plans: we'll first spend 4 days in Sydney, before flying to Cairns on the 6th where we travel around the area (Cairns, Daintree, Port Douglas (eclipse), Townsville, ...) for 12 days before making our way down to Brisbane and return to Belgium. We'll have a rental car to travel around.

Clear skies,
Koen

PS. Moderators, if this is not the correct place for this post, feel free to move it.

Hi Koen,

Try contacting one of the Astro societies around the areas you will be travelling.
There is a list of them here...

Hope you have a great trip.

Molly.
