Visiting Berlin

Hi all,

Coming up in the next few months I have a couple of weeks in Berlin. One where I will be keeping myself occupied while my wife is at a training course.

I am not much of a OS traveler. The prospect of finding my way around foreign cities without getting lost, mugged or appearing ignorant by not speaking the local language kind of put me off.

Could anyone recommend sites to visit of astronomical or space flight relevance? I don't mind long train trips to get there, but needs to be within the reach of a day trip from Berlin.

Also, other suggestions of non-astronomical sites would be taken on board. I have been looking at the well known monuments, memorials and museums.

Thanks,
Roger.

Hi Roger,

I was in Berlin in April12.

The ICE train is something else. How far do you need to travel? It can get up to 300 Klms/hr.

ICE = Inter City Express. You can take lunch and beer to be consumed on board. As long as you don't disturb the peace it is allowed.

Visit Checkpoint Charlie. It is a big museum. Looks small but is huge. Costs a bit. Well worth it.

Go on a tour of one of the concetration camps (remains of) Two day hop on, hop off bus tours. Cheap.

Have fun. I did, as well as being disgusted and horrified at the treatment of Jews back in the WW2.

Cheers

Berlin is really easy to get around in!

Make sure you get to the Pergamon and take a gander at the Berlin Cathedral. Don't smuggle a tripod in. I learnt the hard way.

Also, the eating at the train/metro stations is better than some of the top restuarants here.

ha I got a stern telling off for photographing inside the Royal Exchange building in London, I don't plan on repeating that To be fair the tour guide warned me but through the fuzzy head of a cold I didn't interpret what she said quite right - oops!

Thanks Marty .. I'm looking forward to going on at least one ICE trip. Hamburg and Dresden are possibilities at the moment. Hamburg almost certain but unsure if I can fit in another. Haven't worked out what's at Dresden yet but it was recommended.
