The Dish At Night

To continue the posting of photos of The Dish after the Malin Awards last weekend, here is one of my attempts. I thought I'd try something a little different by taking a close up of it at night. Most photos are wide shots taking in the stars and planets behind it, but I think the architecture and lighting of Dish are much better viewed with a tighter shot. I also like the red light arc due to the lens.

It's not framed perfectly as I took this in a little bit of a rush because Alex wanted his tripod back! Thanks for the use of it Alex! I shouldn't have forgotten mine....

Nikon D800E, Nikon 80-200 f2.8 at 145mm, ISO 1600, 20sec. No processing.

Nice shot there Wayne,

I'm envious as I had a lot of images of the dish I did a couple of years back while on holiday but lost them all with a HD crash before I'd backed up.
A good excuse to go back I guess and do them again as it's a significant bit of gear sitting there.

Great image and the lighting of the the Dish structures is just sublime. The dynamic range of Nikon D800 is something unreal.

I'll need to give that long f/l a go next year weather permitting.

You did not miss much by leaving at that time - the sky closed pretty much as you left and only opened for a few minutes in the morning.

Thanks Alex. Yes the dynamic range is amazing. Ever time people ask what I like about the 800E I always say first up the DR! The detail in this image when blown up is amazing too.

The cloud usually parts for me - just call me Moses! haha. A shame it came up again as your timelapses would have been great. At least you got a few stills. Next time!

Great shot Wayne. D800E is a hot camera and dynamic range and resolution/image quality are its strengths. Its unmatched in that area for a DSLR.

How do you find the 80-200 F2.8? It seems a viable alternative to the more expensive 70-200 F2.8 VR11. How do you rate it?

Yes agreed for sure, although I don't know the Canons.

I'm finding the 80-200 fantastic but again I have no experience with the 70-200. I wasn't concerned with having VR so went for the cheaper option but it's still a pro lens! Very sharp and quick focus. Mine's the rarer light grey lens too!

nice one.. still so many photo opportunities at the dish to explore. i belatedly tried something like this in the morning twilight but the lights at night much the preferred way. so many photos to take, so little clear sky to play with..

Thanks Paul and Phil. Yes that view screen is better than any I've had before. I've taken daylight photos each of the last three years during the DMAs of the dish because it's so photogenic! It keeps moving to different angles which means you can get different shots each time. I also took a couple of other beauties when it was clear briefly that night. Timed that just right me thinks!
