Wow, thanks all for the amazing warm welcome! Seems like a great forum.

Really looking forward to the move down under, been planning it for a while now and it's great that it's finally only a few weeks away.

Any recommendations for good astronomy retailers and astro clubs/societies would be most welcome. I'm going to have no scope for about 12 weeks until all my stuff gets shipped over, but I'll be throwing a pair of binoculars in my suitcase to start to check out the new skies!

From my own experience, and not to say others are not also good... if you are near Frontier Optics, Daniel is knowledgeable, honest and fair. If you are not near him there is no reason to fear doing over the web transactions with him.

Hi all,

Quick update - been in Australia for just over a month so far. A few trials and tribulations to deal with, but nothing too serious.

The wife has found work but I have yet to do so. Which leaves me with an excellent opportunity to be an almost full time astronomer. Once the container with our stuff in turns up that is.

I'm finding the lack of pollution up in north Sydney amazing, but the southern skies are taking a lot of getting used to. It's literally like starting from scratch, but what great fun it will be learning my way around the skies again.

Hi, moving to Pymble this week. It will be interesting to see what the light pollution is like.

G'day Jon and welcome to IIS.
You will definitely be amazed at the southern sky and it should be getting to it's best in winter.
Feel free to come to the Pony Club any time on a new moon night and get a a good fix of the cosmos. It is just a short drive up the F3 from Pymble.(about an hours drive). There are a good few people come up from Sydney most nights, so if you haven't a vehicle and need a lift, I am sure someone coming would oblige. There will be a good range of scopes to look through.
