good quality medium 1.25" eyepiece?

Hi all,

I have a selection of plossl eyepieces (12.5mm celestron; 26mm Sirius; 32mm Televue) and a nagler 4.8mm. What I think I need to a top quality eyepiece around 20mm. It needs to be 1.25". Any suggestions from people's experience??

Umm, what kind of scope? How is it mounted? What do you like looking at?

Cheers,
Jason.

Can't go wrong with the 19mm Televue Panoptic, IMHO. Works a treat in an SCT too.

Try the GSO Superview from Andrews Communications in Sydney. Great value. They have a 15mm and a 20mm. I'm very happy with my 15mm. Check out the website.

Hi Grant,

Some of the cheaper and mid priced eyepieces work fine in slow focal ratio scopes but unfortunately they perform very poorly in fast focal ratio newtonians and refractors. I suggest you work out which scope you are going to buy and then get eyepieces that suit the scope.

Cheers,
John B

I am looking at getting a CGEM 1100. Have just emailed Andrews for availability and price once all the extras are added. I will be getting a focal reducer with it. With my current eyepieces, there is a major gap between 12.5mm and 26mm. In addition, my best current eyepieces are the Nagler - which is a 4.8mm - and the Televue Plossl - which is 32mm - so I am wanting a quality eyepiece in the middle (18-20mm).

Does anyone have both a 19mm Panoptic and a GSO superview to compare quality? Obviously the Televue will be better, but HOW much better is it?

In my experience the Superviews are attrocious in scopes faster than about f/7.

As John says, you really need to have the scope in your hot little hands before considering the eyepieces.

Cheers,
Jason.

For an SCT:
20mm or 22mm Nagler.
Anything else is just talk.

OK.
Maybe a Vixen LVW22 or a 17 Ethos.
I haven't yet tried the ES's, but they're supposed to be pretty good also.
But you get the point.
No rubbish.

Aren't they 2" eyepieces? I will have a 1.25" star diagonal.
