"Backwards compatiability" for canon cameras

Hi All.

Just a quick question,I have a canon 450D,and use it via the computer,it came with software,and all works well.

I now also have a canon 50D,I plug it in and computer recognizes it,I can open up its files in computer conected devices,the computer call it 50D.

But when I open EOS utility,it says unknown camera,

If I put the software into the computer that came with it will it be compatible with the 450D,or only the 50D???

One difference in these two cameras is 50D is digiIV and 450D digi III,

So just wondering if I should label a folder for 50D software to go into without,blending out the current 450D software.

I know there are a few people that have different bodies-i.e a 40D and a 5D mk II,How do you go with opperating them on your lap top??

Is it only one or the other?? or can I have both??

You can have both with the same program.
It is only the driver you have to install.
I did this with my 40D and my 10D and it all works.

After many hours of working through this problem,It appears my disc of drivers that came with 50D are 'tainted' or 'corupted',I went through a process of illumination of all the possible faults,(twice) and in the end I concluded that the drivers were the cause of issues.

I eventually re installed 450D drivers,which a perfectly healthy,and the went to

canon.au and down loaded the 50D utility drivers 2.73 after this everthing worked (both cameras) via lap top.I would have spent a good 8hrs,on something that should have been so simple!

Wonder if I will get a re-imbursment of my time from Canon,because of what appears to be their faulty disc! (giggles)

So,I post this,that someone else who has a similar issue can take this on board,to help with their problem solving.

Actually,I am rather pleased with myself,I am not a computer person,and had never used one untill two years ago.So ploughed through this,with applied reasoning(and some help from Dennis and Mark),thanks to both

Sorry I didn't get to see this and reply until now.

My suggestion was going to be exactly what you've done (as I had the 300D, 350D, 40D and 5D Mark II software all installed and working correctly together).

My suggestion was to remove everything, install the 450D drivers and then download the latest from Canon.

Ah-no dramas,Humayan,It was a bit hard for me to describe the issue with words on screen,So It may have been difficult for others to understand,what I was trying to describe.

It was a bit of a test,really these sorts of things happen all the time,to people that are involved in the type of applications that are regular to most on IIS,but perhaps not the average user of this type of equipment.So sooner or later one has to deal with these issues.Yes-the canon disc was most likely at fault,but I am more interested in being 'problem solving' than 'problem centred'.

The most annoying issue was some 'ghosting' from a logitec program,that appeared to take my computer 'hostage',that took me a while to deal with,while sorting out canon bit,also the 'anti virus' program jumped the rails a bit too.

So I just worked through the issues like a NTSB officer,All appears to be flying along smoothly now
