After many hours of working through this problem,It appears my disc of drivers that came with 50D are 'tainted' or 'corupted',I went through a process of illumination of all the possible faults,(twice) and in the end I concluded that the drivers were the cause of issues.
I eventually re installed 450D drivers,which a perfectly healthy,and the went to
canon.au and down loaded the 50D utility drivers 2.73 after this everthing worked (both cameras) via lap top.I would have spent a good 8hrs,on something that should have been so simple!
Wonder if I will get a re-imbursment of my time from Canon, because of what appears to be their faulty disc! (giggles)
So,I post this, that someone else who has a similar issue can take this on board,to help with their problem solving.
Actually,I am rather pleased with myself,I am not a computer person, and had never used one untill two years ago.So ploughed through this, with applied reasoning(and some help from Dennis and Mark),thanks to both
To eventually feel satisfied to where the problem was coming from, and to move forward and solve it.
