we have ours connected via the AV surround sound decoder/receiver thingy. I think if you want surround sound that's the way to do it. Good it is too !
But, if you just have the stand alone tele, I think they come with a 'virtual surround sound' setting if you look through the on screen display 'sound' options.

You'll probably find sound comes out as a digital signal these days. My units here are connected via optic fibres instead of wires. Amplifiers are called receivers as they receive the digital signal and decode it into seperate channels. Hi Def TV sends in 5 channel surround while some bluray/dvd's are 7 channel.
