I was in the post office......

.......yesterday, & the post master & i were having a good old chat about nothing in general (as usual). We got onto the subject of astronomy somehow, & he happened to mention he was at some guys place one night several years ago looking thru this guys telescope while they were all having a BBQ. Naturally I pricked my ears up & asked him plenty of questions about the night, the telescope/where the owner lives, etc etc etc!! The post master gave me a name & a place, so I went & called on this guy at his place of business today.

Normally to 'drop' in on someone youv'e never met & quiz them out on something can be classified as 'kinda weird' but in my small town (population of 850) it's not 'weird' at all.

Turns out we kind of knew each other....seen each other about etc etc.

To cut a long story short, he doesn't seem to be all THAT into astronomy like I am. When I asked what kind/size of telescope etc, he said he didn't really know?? (go fiqure) When I told him all about what I was upto & my scopes blah blah, his jaw dropped a fair bit & his eyes twinkled.....so I can tell from that I did spark some further interest. We exchanged phone # & addresses
and I told him I'd ring him when I was setup on a good night, & he can come around for a session if he wanted. From what I can gather, I think he must own a small dia. refractor, probably a tasco at a guess, lol. This dudes eyes will pop if he has a gander thru my scopes compared to a lil' tasco?!

Anyhow, it was good to actually meet another person semi-into astronomy in the flesh for a change, rather than in a forum The only other person I know lives up the road 20 kms away (rich farmer) who owns a 16" meade SCT in an observatory, whom I have met, but nothing has really eventuated from that as yet, as in him visiting me or vice versa.

Strange how things can work out at times. With a population of only 850, shouldn't you all now each other Sounds like you got his ears pricked up so i hope it all works out with some good viewing for you both.

It's the country town attitude Peter. Not snobby, just quiet. Most people know each other to say hello to, but not everyone knows much about each other. Friendly but not intrusive

John, remember the bloke I was talking about a few months back who stood next to my telescope but didn't want to take the 5 seconds to look into it? Well, he has started asking questions about scopes now!

I'll get him interested yet!!

lol...I didn't wanna lay it on him too thick at once...I DID tell him I was in a GREAT forum on the internet......of course! I'll work on that one slowly, I don't know if he's on the net or not yet.

Toetoe: Yeah, we all know everyone by sight of course..But not necessarily by name..

Ken: I HOPE I blow him away with some good viewing yup! He did make a 4 or 5 inch dia. circle with his hands when I asked how big his scope was. It'll be interesting to see what it is..

Yep, your right, sounds like a Tasco (or other) 114mm Reflector. I don't really think it will be a 4" refractor!! But one can only hope.

Yes Ken, I remember, that's good mate! Heres another quick story: I went back to see the post master a couple of hrs later cos' I got to thinking: "that was rude of me!? I didn't ask him round for a look thru me telescope!" So I asked him....He said "no way! I'm not interested!" I said "what?" He said "yeah, thanks anyway john, but no...not interested" I said "your kidding me, right?? You saying no to a look thru a 12.5" telescope, is that correct Kevin???" he said "yup" so I said ok, I'll ummm catch you around then. I walked outa the post office scratching my head.........It must take all kinds, huh??

I will never understand that way of thinking though!

The Tasco is my GOD for the time being..

I understand what it is like in small towns, i just felt like poking the stick, sorry I like the laid back feeling and giving people the nod in a small community where it's nice and friendly.
