It’s of grave concern that these four souls are travelling in what’s essentially an unproven craft. Apollo 13 delivered as a consequence of the succession of unmanned and manned missions.
The idea of sending these brave people around the moon, in a crafted that’s only flown once before is madness. Yes, I known the arguments, components of the craft have flown many times before and are proven tech. What’s not proven is the ship itself, the craft, it represents more than the sum of parts, it must be a complete and proven system, for one I’m not confident it’s a proven system. Be it a plane or a space craft, only flights & hours make a proven ship.
Let’s pray for their safe return, God speed.

Things do seem to be going rather fast. They have only had one successful unmanned mission and they are straight into a manned mission. Maybe data from the unmanned flight instilled enough confidence for the powers to be to go down this route. I too hope it is a safe successful mission.

I watched the launch as a kid but folk may not remember that Apollo 8 was the “first manned flight of a Saturn 5 booster”. Originally scheduled for an earth orbital mission it was later changed to a flight to the Moon ( Lunar orbit rendezvous or LOR )
The Saturn 5 booster was tested unmanned with Apollo 4, 5 and 6 but not without problems.
NB: Apollo 7 used the much smaller Saturn 1B booster ( lower risk ) for its earth orbital test of the command and service module.

If Apollo 8 wasn’t a massive risk ( bordering on madness ) I don’t know what is !!!

Good luck Artemis 2 !!!

27 Astronauts survived the journey in the 60's and 70's .. I am sure this crew will do just fine.

Regarding your title, perhaps you should just say "people"?
Unless one of them decides to identify as a squid (or something). Anything's possible these days.

I think the danger of the VA belt is overestimated. The average doses for the crews (they all wore dosimeters) on each Apollo mission are in the attachment. For comparison, the average radiation dosage for a full body medical CT scan is around 1 rad, only one flight, Apollo 14 exceeded that.

All the Apollo missions sailed through the skinniest region of the Belt
