Success at last! (EtaCar, Tarantula, M83, M8+M20)

Hello all

Ah, that wonderful feeling when things go correctly for once, and everything comes together...

I spent some time at the ASV dark sky site on the weekend. (Yes, it was cold, and humid. Why do you ask? ) The mount worked perfectly and I was able to capture 4 targets with (to me) great success.

Thanks again to everyone for all your support and guidance over the past couple of weeks - it all paid off.

All images taken by D7100 DSLR on an EvoStar 72ED+flattener on the HEQ5-Pro. Each image made from 100 subs of 30 seconds, at ISO 3200. (Yes, I know, risking a lot of noise, but it worked out in the end.)

I stacked them all with Siril, Sequator and Affinity Photo, then took the best one of each target for further processing. It's interesting to see the massive differences between the three applications when if comes to stacking.

These images are great - especially given the short integration! Apparently higher ISO actually decreases noise, rather than increasing it (contrary to common belief), but at the sacrifice of lower dynamic range. I tend to go lower ISO on my DSLR to get a better dynamic range as I can always decrease noise with longer integration and good calibration frames. There’s a website which gives you the optimal ISO for your DSLR (sorry I can’t remember it, but someone might be able to provide the link). However, given the short integration, the higher ISO was probably the better option. Well done!

What only four ??? you need to become more efficient...

Heck even when things all go well for me just getting one object in a night is a difficult thing to achieve.

I don't know about this ISO thing..well I know the theory and low is the go but high gives such great results and usually you can manage the noise. If it works go for it.

Look I am so happy to see that it all came together and believe me that is a great rig..now that I have a huge RASA it makes me realise just how fantastic an 80mm..yours 70mm same really..just how great the set up really is..don't be in a rush to get bigger..go narrow band before bigger would be my suggestion..but you have so much ahead of you ..just remain content and proud of your work.

AND they are really great images ...you must be so happy as you should be..now make sure you have copies on your phone to show check out girls and doctors, nurses ...actually anyone with whom you have eye contact.

Great work... time to be proud of your efforts...although one should not indulge pride in any other area..but with ones astro photos it's ok.

Lovely images and further inspiration for me, especially the Tarantula Nebula - one of my visual faves. I've spent a lot of time over the years viewing it with a UHC-S filter, I'm now keen to take some images of it. Regards, Alex

Sadly, the weather is not looking good down here for the next week or so. Otherwise I'd be out almost every night getting more imaging done.
