Hi Ian,

I think (stress, I think) you will find it is an attempt at a phone scam known as 'One-Ring' cell phone scam...

Are you only getting one or two rings then it stops before you can answer it?

They are an attempt to get you to call back, at which point they put you on hold & you end up getting charged a ridiculous amount on your mobile bill (I'm assuming they are to your mobile phone) from which the scammer benefits.

If indeed you are getting them to your mobile phone, you should have the option to go back into your 'recent calls' select the number & block it. This means you won't get a call again from that number. However, please note they do change numbers so, you might end up doing it a few times.

Hope this helps

You could try a call blocking app (they maintain lists of spam/scam numbers)

I'm on an iPhone.

I used to use HiYa (but it wasn't super brilliant in Australia).
I'm currently running the free version of TrueCaller, which seems to be helping, however, it's hard to know without paying how good it really is. Scores highly on the app store ratings.

These work better overseas (clearly), but they are better than nothing.
