The 19hr drive (each way) in Bouncy

Loaded up the Mitsubishi Pantec on Monday morning - so full, there was just room to throw some food in at the last second - and drove to Canberra from the Sunshine Coast: Maroochydore-Brisbane-Warwick (up Cunninghams Gap)-Goondiwindi-Narrabri-Coonabarrabran-Dubbo-Cowra-Yass-Canberra. Almost non-stop, with me as sole driver (stupid, but it was done).

Damned road between Warwick and Goondiwindi is a disgrace to QLD - I hit the roof of the bloody truck so many times, and have jinked my neck quite badly (that's with the seat set to a comfortable level). I have no idea where my tail bone is - somewhere in my throat I believe Between Goondiwindi and Gurley wasn't much better. At least the Kangaroo scare whistles DO work VERY well, and each skippy that seemed like it wanted to come on the road very quickly headed back into the bush (as did a couple dingos and a fox).

Between Gurley and Narrabri, around 0019 (0119 DST), I spotted a VERY large and bright fireball/bolide heading SSE. No apparent tail, but VERY bright and seemingly large. Stopped on the outskirts of Coonabarrabran for the call of nature, and looked up...almost wet my shoes! I now understand the allure of Coona!!!! OMG OMG OMG. That's WITH Moon...I can only dream of what it is like moonless!

Arrived at Canberra, and was greeted by Kunama at our new abode - he ALWAYS seems to find me before I find myself LOL. Found much to my chagrin that some rabbits have decided to make a hole big enough for a wombat under our house foundations, so the groundsmen are apparently onto this (or it could have been ASIO planting bugs...hmmmm). A few other dramas with electricity (still) but generally good to go. Unloaded the truck (grrrrrrrrr), gave Matt temporary custody of my Takahashi, drove to the local Red Rooster, went home and crashed...until 5 am and started the reverse procedure....the pain...

Started the reverse drive, with a 2 hour visit to the AWM, and was almost Yass when remembered in my tiredness had left chicken scraps in the house...it'd be a week before I brought the family back....it was gonna smell. BAD. Worse than my BO after driving 19hrs straight in a cramped truck cab....I turned around. An hour lost but worth it - less screaming from the wife and kids later (think ahead grasshopper). It's incredible how much faster a trip seems when you have done it before - the return felt a LOT shorter than the down trip. A LOT. Exacerbated my neck again on the same stretch between Goondi and Warwick, discovered Narrabri jerky does horrible things to your intestines after 8 hours (Johnny Cash sung a song about it...burn burn burn, the ring of fire....)

Got back to Maroochydore at 8am (drove all through the night again), unloaded the items I brought back for some other people, washed the truck, and crashed. Woke up at 2pm. Dropped Boucy back to the hirer...said a few choice words about the suspesion and clutch (and told the truck we were divorced). Fell asleep again at 5pm. Just woke up after sleeping on an inflatable mattress with a slow leak...by 4am I was on the carpet.

Now to load up the family car with wife and kids and do it all over again...going Pacific this time...don't need to bore the kids with endless sheep.

I need a holiday. Coonabarrabran seems like a nice area

haha, reminds me of when I did the same trip. I drove one car down, unpacked, drove back up, wife and stepkids flew down while I drove the second car down.

On my first trip, I took a wrong turn on a roundabout and ended up 2 hours back up north, lol. It wasn't until I pulled into Grafton (where I had originally filled up) did I realise what I had done! So, so stupid! I slept near Bunnings for 30 minutes before heading off again.

I didn't take the inland route, choosing the coastal one instead.

Where abouts are you?

Lewis was there some reason behind this move? I would imagine many people living in Canberra would be longing for the Sunshine coast?

I lasted 9 months before I moved back to Canberra. The heat and humidity does my head in.

The final straw was November 2014, Brisbane CBD, 8 AM, 34 degrees and 85% humidity. That was the first week of spring. No, thanks!

We just sold our house up in Caloundra as well, so, thankfully, there's no more connection to the Sunshine Coast!

H, down on the border between Majura and Queanbeyan. Being on the border allows a quick escape when Trump does his inaugural visit

Glen apart from the beach - which we never visit - and way too relaxed lifestyle, the SSC has little to offer, especially employment unless you are a coffee barista or a chef. It's becoming retiree central and it shows.

Just being in the ACT for 2 days made me feel reinvigorated to get back into my lab work or microbiological research. Plus the government is giving my wife a job at ANU and there is plenty for the kids to do. I think I will even volunteer at the AWM and Stromlo.

Yeah I know Col...he already sold it for $500...seems Jenny wasn't happy with him acquiring another telescope so he had to sell it.

If he offers to buy eyepieces from you remember it will be through ill-begotten funds

I don't recall anything about "temporary custody" Lewis

Hey Col, I now have that spare $500 I owe you.....

Glen, the Sunshine Coast lost its shine around 1999-2003 when the 'sea-change' was in full swing. Seems everyone in Brisbane, Melbourne and Korea thought it was a good idea to buy up everything between Noosa and Caloundra, thus driving up property prices at an astonishing rate.
(That worked out well for us, really well....)

A cup of coffee at Mooloolaba went from $2.00 to $6.50 in months....
4 Prawns on a plate drizzled with some brown stuff became the norm instead of a plateful of seafood for the same price.

I do miss the scuba diving though......

to Canberra Lewis

Ha Ha these are the trips that would make good reality TV

But Matt .....!?! ......you told me that was your scope

I have driven to Brisbane and back about 6 or 7 times now all along the Coast .....sounds like I haven't missed much by not taking the inland route !

You can start your Canberra based volunteering at my place Lewis .....need slashing, fencing, pier installed, some general cleanup and other odd jobs

Hang on Phil, I am not doing anything for you until you install the dairy grade stainless steel dome.

Tomorrow is D Day...drive day. Definitely going Pacific highway. I am wanting this drive about as much as quadruple wisdom tooth removal on the same day without anaesthetic....

Wrong way around.
Should move here and holiday elsewhere.

And yes you eventually learn how to spell it, but I still have to write it down when spelling it over the phone. I forget where I'm up to.
