Windows 10 updates

Here is a link to show how to force windows 10 to advise you that updates are available without automatically downloading and installing.

I know that this is a real pain to a lot of Windows 10 users, hopefully this works. Personally I am not going near it until they have had a good go at getting rid of the major bugs.

I am inclined to agree with you about waiting a while before taking up Microsoft's "free" Windows 10 offer and look for further comments from IceInSpace. Presumably we can wait up to 12 months before making the changeover decision. I currently have Windows 7 which is OK but I preferred the flexibility of my old XP.

Just note that this fix requires editing of group policies which can't be done on Windows 10 Home edition. It is only for Pro edition.

Well that's a bugger. I am on the hunt for a new PC, with imaging and processing in mind too, and just have to sit on the fence right now, because W8 isn't so great with non-touch screens.

It'd be enough for a bloke to give Mac a go for once.

Just be careful with you 12 month wait - by about week 3 Windows 7 starts to see Windows 10 as a "Critical Update" and will try to install it if you have set WIndows 7 Update to on rather than Inform me!

Auto update is a major problem for us at work, we left a netbook running some IP traces over a few days, windows update crashed the machine by attempting to update, despite the update service being turned off, the W10 offer had somehow been loaded and was trying to update. We use laptops for programming PABX's and can't afford to have update continually changing parameters and then us having to find workarounds. Our laptops are often only on for a few minutes at a time and to have pesky update services robbing internet bandwidth and processor resources when we're trying to get something done is frustrating. The same applies to Java, every time they increase security we have to find workarounds.

The windows 10 download and upgrade is handled by a separate program, which then prompts windows update to upgrade the OS. To further confuse things this program came through by a windows update. i.e. If the program is installed that "offers" you windows 10 then disabling windows update will not stop the download of Windows 10.

If you have a critical PC with Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 installed then you should uninstall update KB3035583

That's also the way to get rid of the pesky icon and upgrade reminder.

Well I bought another notebook with W8 yesterday, but will accumulate the W10 tweak info for [perhaps] the inevitable down the track.

I am running 2 computers on Wins 10 so far. Overall I like it.
One of the computers was running Wins 7 and it crashed. I could not recover it despite many attempts.

I saved Wins 10 onto a flash drive and then booted the crashed computer from that drive and it loaded Wins10 eventually.

I had to chose in that instance custom install which makes your programs unable to run but the other install would not work.

So now I have a working computer again out of a crashed one.

A few minor irritations so far like how do you set home page on Microsoft Edge, how do you get rid of all those news tiles? I don't want to see the latest tragedy on the planet as the first thing my computer hands to me.

Hit the three dots in the top right. Click Settings. And under "Open With" set it to something other than start page. You can select "A specific page or pages" as one of the options.

That may not be the end of it. That update is responsible for installing Windows 10, but it turns out it may not be responsible for it downloading it. There's some news of underhanded crap Microsoft did over the past week where most computers are now downloading the update.

I'm bought the Pro Edition of Win7 and Win10 has downloaded like for like. I'd never bother with Home Edition anything, too restrictive.
