M8 Printed on Transparency

Not sure if this is correct place.. please move this if it isn't.

Being as I'm fairly new to this, I've printed some of my shots and been wholly disappointed by how they appear. Printing generally makes things 30% darker than what you see on screen, and relies on the reflective light around bouncing off the paper and into our eyeballs, invariably distorting the colours or making the field uneven depending on the rooms lightning conditions.

So here is an experiment printing to transparency from a commercial printer, which cost $27.50 for an A4 here in Byron Bay.

I'm quite pleased with the result. This kind of printing is normally used for night outdoor advertising but if I can find a bright enough lightbox frame that I can swap photos in/out of it would probably a neat solution for indoors wall viewing. The print itself is higher resolution than a typical computer screens lowly 72dpi so you get the best of both worlds.

A thought, have a frame made up with an el wire white light panel at the back.

Looks good, but I think lots of guys print to metallic paper to get these types of images to pop.

I have one of those EL panels, it would work well as a backing. I use it for taking flats

I agree I printed some calendars out and they come out really dark plus the high reflectivity gloss makes it near impossible to see anything!

It produces nice even light and it's very small and easy to store with my gear.
The only complaint I have is that it doesn't emit much light down the red end of the spectrum so I find my exposures through a red filter are significantly longer than the green and blue. Obviously it's even longer for Ha and SII where my exposures are about 30 seconds I think, compared to about 5 for OIII. Minor inconvienience though all things considered

EDIT: Also, just thinking about this, I guess the non-white light may be an issue if you're shooting with a OSC.

Yeh I've done some printing on metallic gloss, definitely the best unlit option!

The lightbox/duratrans looks great.

If you want a great print though- Try CPL in Melbourne- We're having an ASV members Astrophotography exhibition printed there on Fuji Flex super gloss, its amazing! Not a true paper as such, more a plastic.
