Planets look great in the eyepiece but are very small in a dslr image so the first thing to do, is to use a 2x barlow to double the size. Set your camera to live view or use mirror lock to reduce vibrations, use a remote shutter release and try and keep the iso low. Try different shutter speeds to get the exposure right. All you need then is a clear, still night. You will find that the atmosphere will steady every few moments so take lots of pics and hope for the best.
Here's a snap I took a couple of weeks ago canon 1100d 1/50 sec at iso 100 with 2x barlow (10" f4.8 newt)

Thanks for the info! Will defiantly give it a go next time! was so exciting acutally relizeing I had taken a photo and been able to notice it haha
