Great Carina Nebula with Homunculus

After seeing Mike Sidonio's image of the Key Hole and the Homunculus recently I found it was just the impetus I needed to undertake this long held goal. I have long enjoyed the view of the homunculus through a large aperture telescope and have always wanted to image the nebula with the surrounding field. So I set about recollecting the data with a better composition than my last effort. Guiding was better with some nights of quite good seeing.

This field of view incorporates the Mystic Mountain, The Key Hole nebula, The Homunculus and the Wall of the Carina Nebula.

really nice Paul - great blend and detail. super sharp in parts also.

has the homunculus / great carina neb combo got to be the widest dynamic range imaged for an astro image? I wonder. I guess it would be a showdown between the homunculus and trapezium.

Wow! Super sharp indeed. Love the 3D effect surrounding the Key hole and the Homunculus is quite visible, well done Paul!

Hi Paul,
how on earth did you get the GSO RC12 to give such sharp images?
I can see the "finger of God " & the " mountain " quite clearly.
That's amazing - is it heavily modified?

cheers
Allan

Very nice Paul. Great detail and I am starting to find these colours more acceptable.
Well done.

Hmm well having done both now I guess I should have an opinion. I think the Trap is the hardest between the two. I still look at my image of it and am not quite happy with how the trap looks. It is the same with this image and the homunculus. Both are tough to get right.

No Allan, not heavily modified. Well collimated, good seeing and pretty reasonable guiding. My optics came out of a tube GSO RC which just came straight off the shelf at Bintel. I have spent a lot of time tweaking things. Though as I said to a mate tonight after I collimated his RC10, I could tweak the collimation on my scope now after getting his near perfect. Sharpening techniques also help in the processing too.

This palette works pretty well I think Doug. I initially did not like narrow band but now I really like it in this palette. It shows so much more detail.

Thanks Rick. There is always more to do. I could always do a hi res Homunculus with the C14 and then scale that into the shot as a luminance layer, but that will have to wait.

Thanks Ross. I looked at other composition to determine what worked best but in the end this one seemed to work to show the Homunculus shape nicely. It also makes a lot of the side wall more attractive too I think.

Wow, that is the sharpest image I have seen of this object short of the Hubble. That scope is a keeper for sure.

I have seen sharper images around but I am pretty happy with how sharp this image looks. And now that I think I have the guiding sorted with PE finally being correctly properly, I anticipate better images yet to come. The question is; do I really need an AOX?

The full size image is just stunning. The detail and color are stunning with a smooth background yet sharp details.

Yep, what they've all said....

High res is where it's at, that sharp fine detail is rather epic.

Well not quite full res, but around 75%. I just find that putting images up that size look better to me. Thanks for the comment. That is what I aim for in my imaging.

Thanks Chris. The postage stamp just really does not show things well unfortunately. Almost can be said now that I am pretty happy with this system. Just some more minor tweaks to go yet.
