Hi David,

Please forgive me if you are already aware of how bright a lunar eclipse is, but there is no need to chase down a dark site to view it. A lunar eclipse is spectacular no matter where you are, even in the CBD! It is a great chance to show the sky to people who would normally not be aware of what is going on,

Mental.

Unless you're somewhere like my place where the Moon won't clear the trees until just before totality. I can't go elsewhere because SWMBO will be home recovering from surgery.

Andrew, I wish your wife a speedy recovery.

You bring up a interesting point: if you don't have access to a decent sky, maybe go somewhere more open both to the sky AND passers by. I might look into making my front yard a viewing site. I'll either be called a Devil worshipper for changing Moon to blood red, or inspire them. This is one thing I need to run past SWMBO...

I'm feeling a bit inspired here - thanks David! I live in Maroubra too. I'll look into the timing of the eclipse event and maybe try to get my neighbours to get together. I'd do it in my front yard/driveway. I could have a visual scope set up and my little astro video camera too. By the immediate sounds of the eclipse' timing, my neighbour's trres could be a problem as they obsure much of the eastern aspect from my driveway. Bit of planning to be done.

See what happens...

Mental.

Thanks for the reply. The reason why I asked is because my balcony is blocked by next block

I'll definitely get out if the weather obliges.

Maroubra... I'd stay away from the beach - damp salty air is no good for scopes and not so great for observing either.

If you're observing down there I'd choose the car park on Marine parade near the Corso, or a bit north at the bend in Marine Pde where there's a big flat area on top of the rocks.

But... My pick is Killara oval near home, it's darker than Maroubra and should give a perfect view.

Thats the carpark I wanna go where you can see many couple doing something secretly

The reason why I choose Maroubra is just because close to my friends and myself.

Will you go tomorrow? Do you have any cut off time (go / no go)? I may convince my friends to go to Killara instead if possible

No problems if you want to come over to Killara oval, it will be quiet for sure and we'll probably have it to ourselves. There's parking on Rosebery Rd - access to the oval is a low gate - but note no cars on the oval, only scopes. If you need power bring a battery.

As for time... Not critical - I'd suggest get ther between 8:15 and 9pm so you'll have to time to set up and watch second contact, mid eclipse is something like 9:20pm.

Keep an eye on the clouds though... The satellite photo of the cloud is not looking good.

Good view of the moon and stars now (8pm). Big blue hole opening up.

Update... sure enough clouded over before 1st contact, and stayed that way. Not even so much as a glimpse. Glad I didn't go out.
