Love it or hate it, anyone with an SX wheel just knows it's a fickle b1tch. If that usb cable is too long your screwed, use the wrong sort of extender and your screwed, use the wrong sort of hub and your screwed.
I've recently found they don't work as an ascom wheel on new Intel desktop motherboards. That's the C200 series boards which covers all current 1155 and 2011 motherboards at least. I've checked this with other wheels so it's not just my wheel or my machine. I've checked this on multiple machines that have gone across my bench. The wheel is not detected from a cold boot of the pc and you have to unplug and replug the USB for it to even be seen by the computer. PITA.
Running it as an ascom wheel don't work in a sequence. It freezes after the first filter change with a waiting for filter message from maxim and it locks up maxim which locks up ascom which means a reboot. I got around this issue by running it with native maxim drivers. These drivers however do not wait for a filter change so you have to guess what pause to put between exposures so the wheel isn't turning when it starts to expose. Also, what happens when I drop maxim and move to something else?
I read that you can run it off a serial connection via the RJ12 socket. You have to inject 6V dc into the cable and pass TX/RX and Ground from the PC serial to the wheel. I modified my 12V->5V usb hub supply box to supply an additional 6V supply to the wheel and tried it out. It didn't work. After a lot of jumping up and down I got involved with Dave Gaskin, the sx programmer, and he found that the wheel has a sleep mode when connected to serial

We got rid of that and my serial sx wheel is now a worker. No need to unplug/replug USB, it starts at boot everytime and the hacked up sx serial ascom driver I wrote for it works fine, theirs does not work at all.
They are still trying to find the issue with new Intel desktop motherboards, it seems they do development work on AMD machines. One would think they'd spring the $400 odd for a stinking Intel board to make their gear work. This wheel cost me over $600 and that's just one person
