Got my nose out of joint!

Quite literally

Was doing a drill during sparring squad at Karate on Tuesday night, and got smashed in the nose with a punch by a guy who lacked the control to pull up short.

And broke my nose!

Blood everywhere.. apparently it's good if the blood comes out, rather than stays in - that way you don't get the swelling and big black eyes.
And I think that's true, because it has never really hurt afterwards and only have a small hint of bruising and no big black eyes.

Went to the hospital and they just checked it was nothing majorly wrong, and then sent me away with an ENT specialist referral. Saw the specialist on Wednesday and am booked in for surgery to straighten in on Tuesday this week.

So all in all, it's come out as well as can be expected. Except it's going to cost me over $1000 with private hospital excess, surgeon and anesthetists fees. An expensive broken nose. Certainly would've preferred to spend it on other things.

I wish I could say "I should've blocked it", but I wasn't trying to block - it was just a drill so I was just standing there being the 'body' while the other guy did the drill. So he's in a bit of a trouble for lacking control especially during a drill.

Also means I can't compete in the upcoming AKF tournament not to mention the time of work, cost etc. Very inconvenient!

Thats sucks, what belt was he? Sure he doesn't box as well cause that's the best place to land a blow and take them down You could go legal on it i guess pending whats signed and well if your nose needs work, plus the cost of income loss ect it might be worth looking into. I guess Miyagi sons crane move can't help with this one Thankgod he wasn't breaking out the old katana, might have ended up alot worse.

It brings a tear to my eye just reading about it.

Most fun things we do have an element of risk involved... I know it just sucks when you're on the wrong end of the risk, and it can be especially trying when its someone else's fault.

I hope they get your nose straight again... Its not like you want to have to do another avatar as well!

Al.

The perpetrator is a 6' 4" 2nd dan black belt - big guy, good skills, just lacks a control. Seeing it was a drill, it should've only been very light touch.

He feels really bad and has offered me a kick to the kahoonas

Yes Dean - I hope the surgeons can bring back my beautiful face

Ouch - I hope everything goes well - find out if they are packing your nose after the surgery - if they are, insist on a local when they remove it!

Sorry to hear that. Hope it heals well.

Was this guy new to karate? Or maybe new to the club trying to make an impression (which he assuredly did!)?
