Grrrrr @ planes (now with plane trails)
Hi all,
I scoped out this location months ago and I thought it had some great potential for some nightsky scapes, but when I got a chance to go there during the week in near perfect conditions I discovered a bit of a problem. It was pretty much smack bang underneath the Sydney-Melbourne flight path AND the main approach to Albury airport. I have never battled so many planes getting in my shots. I set up for a star trail image with one camera while I did single images with another, and I just watched with dismay as plane after plane flew straight through the field of view. The resulting star trail image is ruined. There is no way I can clone out the shear number of planes in it.
Still, it wasn't all doom and gloom. I managed to snap some images that I am quiet happy with in between the planes. Here is the first one.
"Rising Tide"
Lake Hume
Canon 5D Mk II
Pro Optic 14mm lens.
Single 2 minute exposure.
Magic Glove technique.

Cheers
Greg

Sensational Greg, Beautiful spots. The plane trouble should just make you more appreciative of what you've achieved!

Me too Greg - don't tell us the story &
then don't show the result.
You got a great image anyway.

A beautiful image. I just ordered a Canon 5D MKII after seeing the great images done with this camera.

Hmmm, the squiggly one that's coming in to land at Albury (I guess ) does draw the eye...
While its does detract from a pure startrail shot it still an interesting shot in its own right.
I can see why you picked that spot. The planes just make it more of a challenge!

Looks like he flew the holding pattern. Very effective. Lets us now that under this grand tranquil sky is a human element bustling here and there.

Thanks for the great feedback everyone. Yeah there are three planes that went into land at Albury (moving from the right of frame to left) and I think I can count ten Sydney/Melbourne (or vice versa) planes on the right of frame. Seems like a very tight holding pattern turn on that lower one but I guess it was also a long way away at the time of the turn.
Cheers
Greg

Very nice captures Greg. Planes are a pain in the bum, and they're my problem as well. I live on a the same flight path but closer to Sydney.

I agree, Rising Tide is bloomin' brilliant.
Love it!
How long did you expose the sky for out of your 2 min exposure?

Thank you so much Chris, Martin and Mike I'm glad you approve.
Roughly 30 seconds Mike. Give or take a couple of seconds. I just count it out in my head at the start of the exposure and then down comes the glove/cloth/card.

"Rising Tide" is stunning! You must be stoked.
Such a shame about the plane trails - that would have been a cracker of an image. (I really like the front lighting on the trees.) Maybe you could argue that they're not in fact plane trails... but star trails under gravitational lensing?
