I took this image last night (10-12-2011).Using a 450D and a 10-22 mm lens,10 sec exp,iso 400.Focal length 14 mm.I did some slight adjustments and a crop-came out 'pano' style.
Was fairly pleased with how it turned out,any suggestions on a re PP or crop, welcome.
Certainly did not expect to see any eclipse with this storm thumping around.
Hope this is of interest,Thanks for looking-Cheers Chris
That is really lovely! I love the pink that's coming in from the lightning it's great. This would lend itself to a great pic in a multi layered compositing pic if you have lower exposure time pics of the cloud etc to sharpen them up. Also you can pull in a pic of the moon so that it's not blown. Horribly fake picture but it's what the pro's do for dramatic effects.
There is a plugin for Photoshop called Topaz Adjust, It allows you to manipulate the end result image and add HDR effects etc. Hope you don't mind this is a quick setting for dramatic 'pop' it's completely adjustable to your preferences. The pic would look better if working with a higher res raw image.
For thoughts and advice, the PP you have done on this low res, certainly shows the image has good potential.I'll send you the RAW file via email if you like.
I too, like yourself like the pink in the cloud.I do not have the Topaz add on.I just cannot afford it at present.
I know what you mean with a 'fake' moon put in,but would look very fake.I think I'll stick with current moon.Another thought is to crop the other way-maybe remove moon altogether and work on 'poping' storm cloud, and orion.
Great job, Chris! I saw the lightning and was thinking that an image along these lines would turn out great - I guess it did!
Thanks David.
It did certainly look good,I was pleased this image turned out as well as it did,and with some skilled work in PP,it could really come out well. After seeing the PP in Topaz by Paul on the very low res version here,I am rather hopeful. The storm/pink lightning really makes it different.

Thanks again for your help.-cheers Chris
Please send me the raw i would be very interested to see it if full glory. The Topaz plugins are quiet powerful and if used correctly (sometimes less is more, if you know what i mean!) can create some wonderful effects. Topaz detail is especially good for bringing out Lunar details. I think a crop as you said ignoring the moon and using it only as a light source and highlighting the storm will be quiet powerful. There are some discount deals on the topaz filters at the moment and I think that the adjust is $50 at present, you can always download the free trial and use it for a month to 'have a go' that would let you play and the program is not crippled in any way for that month.
Yes,Topaz is good, when used correctly,Dennis use it well with
his wildlife images.I'll try and find the links to get the trial version.
The $50 adjust you mention, might be all I need to get started.
looking forward to Paul's email,so I can send the raw file to him.The work he has done on the low res here, has certainly given it a more dramatic feel.So I am hoping when he runs the larger raw file through the Topaz PP,It should really be something worth while.Might also be worth masking, and working on the storm clouds to make them 'pop' even more.
I hate living in the city, I wish i had a flat space to look at storms again
Fantastic image, could you please email me the original? id love to have it as a desktop wallpaper. skylinevspec000@hotmail.com.
