I was reading this article yesterday. Very interesting findings. It's quite interesting to note that a byproduct of their research is the possibility that the "dark energy" is not isotropically distributed and that the scattering by the observed kSZ Effect that they see in the CMB might be due to this anisotropy. If we assume that the dark energy is synonymous with ZPE then the question arises..."what is creating the anisotropy in the dark energy/ZPE". Since it's believed that the only force that the dark energy/ZPE interacts with is gravity, we have one candidate for the cause of the anisotropy. But, instead of finding the anisotropies as patterns of density difference in the CMB, what we have here is the scattering of CMB photons as they head towards the Earth. So, the anisotropies are much closer to home, so to speak. We will have to look for density fluctuations in the dark energy/ZPE field within space itself, at varying distances from Earth and in all directions.
