What's going on in the Perth astronomical scene?

I have searched and there seems to be a bit going on in Perth including the Astronomical Society of Western Australia but is there anybody in this forum that could tell me more about where a good start might be to meet like minded people in Perth?

Hi Dave,

In my position, I carry out Dark Sky Observing at Jarrahdale for members to attend south of the river observing. Can be quite cold there.
North of the River is Baker Hill, and Serious Deep Sky Observing is held at Tammin. Visitors are welcome and need to contact each rep for details on conditions for the night.

Tonight is Lunar Night at Whiteman Park. Whiteman Park is closed to the public after 6:00pm so you would need to contact Wayne (details on the website) regarding how to get access for any visitors.

Association meetings on this Monday evening at the Como Bridge club, usually have someone coming in to do a talk, and there is club night for members.

Is there anything in particular you are looking at doing?

Hi Malcolm,
Thanks for the quick response. I have yet to buy my first scope. I have been looking at the Skywatcher 12" Collapsible Dob to purchase (I see you have one) but of course advice coming from many sources is to go to "star parties" or suchlike to try different scopes to see which suits me the best. I am very interested in dark sky observing but at the moment I am sure anything will be a pleasure. I think I should probably just join and get along to meetings.
Cheers
Dave

No worries, I hope to actually be at the meeting on this coming Monday. Strange I am going to be selling my DOB in about 2 weeks, going to use it for the last time on next weekend. Shoulder operation is prohibiting me from using it on my own now and will so for the next 6 to 12 months. So I bought another scope.

I've been looking too. I've seen lists of groups and clubs but they've mostly been over east. I did read somewhere that there were meetings in Como (as Malcom said). Would love to hear if anyone knows of anything south of Perth/Mandurah way.

MMMM good point Mel,..... there is nothing so far as I know in Mandurah. However, Mandurah would be a good spot for astrophotography!!!!

There is a shop up here in Malaga, that does some observing nights.( email starrynites@upnaway.com for their updates on observing nights.)
Cheers

I have a DSO with ASWA this coming Saturday at Jarrahdale.
Although best to hold out how the weather is going forecast is too hard to predict this early. Your welcome to come as a visitor. Send me a PM for more information.
I am holding it a week earlier than the other as I would like to go to Tammin for some very dark skies the following week.

sorry Dave, i did too!

Jarrahdale sounds awesome. I really hope the weather clears up. This would be SOOO cool! pm'ing you now!

Tammin? WOW that's east of just about everything the views must be spectacular!

Mandurah is great as there are still so many places to get away from the lights. I'm actually in Dawesville (about 15kms south of Mandurah). Big reserve to the left and the Estuary behind us. I just need to cull some trees... does anyone have a chainsaw?

No problems Mel and Bartman. You take the topic and run with it. Still feeling the love!

Funny about the trees Mel. Now that tree that I love and nurtured in my backyard has become a sky hiding pain! And the patio.. and the garage...and the house! Hmmm.. I guess that's what dark sites are all about as well.
