M45 -Ed 80/canon 300D

The last image in 2005 and the one and only time the gear was out after October-night of dec 30/31

This is from Linden, so reasonably dark site, but the sky glow was something terrible

this is a stack of three ten minute images. ED 80 and canon 300d.

the mount (CG5) was autoguided

stacked in Iris
processed in photoshop
and yes neat image for noise removal -it was a very very warm night so very noisy raw frames

comments welcome

Thanks for looking

I actually have another half hour of lights at ISO 800 that I'll try and add to this lot to see if I can extract any improvement

What a beautiful image, Seeker. So crisp. Amazing!

Could you outline what processing, if any, you undertook in IRIS, apart from registration?

Humayun

Nice work Seeker. The extra half hour should help you bring out more nebulosity.

I know what you mean. Will this cloud ever go away?

Thanks for the nice comments folks. It will be interesting to see what improvement will be possible once I add the extra half hour of data

Hi Humayun

After dark subtraction, division by a flat and usual pre-processing in IRIS(ie conversion from RAW etc etc), I used the COREGISTER3 command (the COREGISTER2 command failed for some unknown reason) to align the frames two at a time and the ADD command to add the frames together

I did an ASINH stretch but it didn't seem to make too much difference so I simply took the stacked image to photoshop

In Photoshop I set black point, stretched levels slightly,

Finally subtracted an artificial flat field (duplicate the original image, clone stamp out any bright stars, blur like crazy, then subtract image from original using the Apply Image command in Photoshop) to get rid of some residual vignetting before running the image through Neat Image using default settings

Zane, Neat Image is this really good program for Noise removal... there is a demo version which is a free download and which is what I use-you can only save the output as a jpeg but hey I can live with that

http://www.neatimage.com/

I didnt use a field flattener..the optical train consisted of the ED 80 and Canon 300D at prime focus

I also worried about the noise but I made sure I got at least three dark frames of 10 minutes duration each as soon as possible after acquiring the lights and median combined these dark frames in IRIS to make a master dark--it certainly got rid of the terrible amp glow on the right hand side of the RAW images

Once again thanks for the interest

Narayan

Thanks for your explanation, Narayan. I will bear these tips in mind next time I try shooting things.

I finally got around to adding the additional 30 minutes of exposure at ISO 800 to my original and this is what I wound up with

in the end its probably not deep enough..wonder how many hours one would need to go with a Canon (unmodified)-many hours i'd suspect.but this is what I have been able to get so far
