anyone interested in a magnetometer kit??

my ham radio friend karsten DL3HRT is putting together a new set of kits for their superb magnetometers.

I can arrange some kits for australia / new zealand interested parties if I get a bunch of us together.

would be interesting as the solar cycle increases to have a "down under" network of devices set up

check out the following links

anyone interested can email for details

Sure - I'm always up for something new. More details would be good ie what else is required. Looking at the download page it indicated a PIC programmer or is that built into the kit?

yep 130 eu for a kit inc 1 sensor... additional sensors allowing 2 or 3 axis measurements are 32 eu extra .... a special case can also be purchased for 15 eu.

kits are easy to build

the software is loaded to the unit by RS232 no programmer needed

we have about 8 kits being purchased for NZ now ... come on AU we need a couple over your way too!!

Cool 3 axis measurements sounds intriguing. I'm up for anything that fits in a small backyard.

Hi David the box is quite small for the actual meter

the sensors are around an inch or so

they need to be kept in a well insulated box but thats easy enough

ill be ordering some kits for a bunch of kiwis if your interested in adding yourself on

I'm interested, but what skills would I need to put the kit together? Soldering, electonics?

To resurrect this thread after two years, the SAM-III magnetometer kits are now available from Whit Reeve in the US (Alaska). The kits have progressed hugely in the past year or so, and Whit has done an excellent job turning the thing into a thoroughly professional product. See his website at http://www.reeve.com/SAMDescription.htm

I have just purchased one of the kits (not cheap - over $400 landed in Oz) and it is very well done, especially the manuals. It's not a kit for someone unused to soldering printed circuit boards. I'm busy building mine at the moment.

Well I'm keen but it looks somewhat complicated to test and setup (there's a section on oscilloscopes in the manual....). I await your progress reports with bated breath.

Cheers

Well just bit the bullet and decided to order a prebuilt version. Now the task is to decide where to mount the sensors. It certainly won't be 1.5m underground..... I'm thinking either an indoor location or attached to the observatory. Just need so ideas on insulation that will keep the temp stable to within a degree 24/7.

Cheers
