Question Light Shroud for SW 10" Collap Dob

Hi All,

I want to make a Light Shroud for my 10" SW-CDOB

I will be using positive velcro on the OTA around the rims of the top and bottom sections.

I will be sowing the negative velcro to the material.

The Problem is I want to get some user opinions regarding the type of material to use?

I had planned on going to Spotlight and browsing through what is avilable.
My concern is buying something that is going to attract more dew or not be strong enough to keep light out.

Im sure plenty of the Dobsonian owners have created or purchased thier own Shroud. Any heads up on the material?

Any advise is respectivly appricated

Cheers,
Ash

The shroud material for my SDM dob in the avatar is simple black rip-stop nylon fabric of a type you might use for a tent. Does the job just fine and is lightweight, which is important.

Hello Ash,

I have used black ripstop nylon as a scope shroud and it is nice and light and doesn't absorb water. It is not completely light proof though. IMV It's disadvantage for your application is that by my observation, it suffers dimensional change with temperature. That is it appears to expand with lowering temperature. This is OK with shrouds that use elastic shock cord to provide constant tensioning, however in your application, I suspect you will find that you might have to tighten it up during the night as the temperature drops on cold nights. I find I have to do this with my 8" travel scope.

I have also seen a ripstop shroud dump a load of water (dew) on a mirror (20") during pack up operations at the end of a dewy night.

I am now using Lycra due to the above issues. I curently have one on order for my 10" from a local dress maker for about $40.

Cheers,
