My HEQ5 DOESNT WORK HELP :(

Hi everyone, My Heq5 that i bought second hand has a manual directional handcontroller, I tried this with the battery pack it came with and it made a buzzing noise on the dec axis like the motors are trying to move but cant? and the R access just makes a single click sound. I thought it might be the battery pack but after using the two different power supplies I get exactly the same results.

To test i have taken the scope off the mout so it has no weight and have tried with the locks on and off (assume they have to be on?).

I read somthing somewhere about a cable in the mount that may not be giving enough power to the motors could this be the problem or am I just doing somthing wrong?

I have never used a mount like this before so I really dont much about them.

Thanks,

Pete

Pete,

Don't know if this will help but when I first tried mine it would not move via the direction controls....A quick call to the supplier and it turned out that I needed to set the speed by pressing 'rate' then a speed (1 - 6 or it goes too fast) then enter.

Of course I first had to enter all required info, start from park, bypass alignment, choose a target and slew to it then choose the rate for correction by direction controls!

Good luck!

Phil

Check the fit of the power plug to the mount....
these can sometimes be sloppy enough to give major problems...

Mmmm i think i will take it apart and at least have a look as per phil's suggestion. At the least it will make it run a little smoother and track better. I guess I will be able to test it in that the motors work in this state as well ie out of gear

Merlin66, I guess that could be the case, would the battery pack I was given be one that came with the scope orininaly you think? because it does the same thing as my two power supplies.

Don't take it apart yet!!!
The exact same thing happend with mine. At 1/2/3 speed, it seems like its just making noise and not moving at all.
Another IISer pointed out that the slower speeds (1-5ish) are meant for tracking. For slewing you need to turn the speed up to 7 or 8.
Problem solved.

Hi Pete,

Either what Peter suggested re the speed or the power supply hasnt enough juice to run the motors, check the rating and see what Amperage it is, ie 1A, 2Amp etc.

My 240V AC plug pack is a 2A one and it drives it fine, when I plugged in a 750ma one, same results as you described...

I run my scope mainly off a 12V powertank from supercheap with a straight 12V cigarette lighter plug that came with it. Perfectly fine with that as it has oodles of current.

Also, download the HEQ5 manual here and have a read....honestly, reading the manual is a good thing....
Hope this helps

Cheers

Chris

Hmmm maybe it is the power being supplied then, I have a 6amp and 5amp 12v supply. Both do exactly the same thing. Trip to supercheap tomorrow
I will need some mobile power at some point anyway.

Okay got myself a 1900AH starter kit from supercheap, sounded similar then i noticed on 16x that it was just moving. I guess it must have been moving all the time just incredibly slow. I did try to judge this though, I will have to retry with the othe power supplies. I cant believe how slow it is on 16x!

I suppose hi speed slewing on Goto mounts is up to about 800x, so probably right....
Shouldn't matter too much if you manually move to rough area of interest then re-engage tracking. I think that's how people do it (perhaps even keep an eye on the RA/Dec rings to help zero in).
