coronado pst

I'm thinking of getting myself a Coronado personal solar telescope, all the reviews are pretty positive. does anyone own one, if so how is it? Secondly, where can you get them in Australia? Geoff.

The PST is a great little scope. I have one for sale BTW in IceTrades ... which I'm only selling because I don't use it very often anymore (I have an SM40 that I use on my ED80 in the obs).

But aside from that, the PST is an amazing little scope. Big bang for the buck IMHO. The best way to get into Ha solar viewing and imaging and very portable. Mounts on a camera tripod, but I find mine easiest to use on my binocular mount.

I bought mine some time ago from Sirius Optics. I'm not sure if they still sell Coronado... but Sirius get a big from me! The price and delivery were good and they were excellent when I discovered the dreaded rust on my objective and they got it back to Coronado and fixed under warranty.

Bintel sell them, so does Telescopes and Asronomy in Adelaide-but why not grab a used PST if you can, especially if you know for sure its had the dreaded rust problem fixed

Before you fork out money out for the used one inspect it if you can.
Or at very least ask for the pictures of the front lens.
I bought a used one "one year old, in as one condition" & it was more then 5 years old & full of PST rust.
Also check a serial number against a list of "sick" PST's here.

Al - I wish you've advertised your PST a month earlier...

With the way the dollar is currently, is there anywhere OS recommended to purchase a PST?

The PST is a great introduction to Ha solar observing.
They can also be modded to give a very large aperture, safe, solar scope.
Here in the UK we're working on Large Aperture Single Stack (LASS) and Large Aperture Double Stack (LADS) designs using sub diameter ERF's and double stacked PST etalons. This gives an opportunity to assemble a 150mm or 200mm solar scope with a resolution <0.4A. Majic!!

Yes, they can be mounted piggy back via a 1/4" camera socket.
The available backfocus doesn't allow directly the use of a DSLR. A webcam at prime focus usually works well. It is possible to image narrower FOV using a barlow/ powermate and a DSLR.
IMHO I'd start with a webcam....

I looked at that (it wasn't on special at the time), but a little bit expensive by the time you send your PST & pay for return shipping.
I'm doing 90mm PST mod instead - thanks Ken
