Sunrise on the Hawkesbury (350D)

Hi guys.

Here's my first real shot with the 350D, taken this morning on my way to work.. there was a nice sunrise with thin high level clouds so I pulled over at the Hawkesbury River.

I'm pretty sure that's Jupiter rising just above the mountains.. StarryNight shows it at 6.5 degrees altitude at that time, so it probably is Jupiter. Not long till Jupiter season, yay!

I took about 25-30 shots this morning, and this is the best of them. A lot of them were throw-aways as I've started learning how hard (and yet, critical) focusing is. I tried manually focussing for most of them, and they look fine through the viewfinder but when you get them onto the computer the treeline on the mountains just weren't sharp. I guess getting correct focus involves taking some test shots, zooming in on the LCD and seeing how it looks.

I took some shots of the waning moon at 300mm but again, they just weren't focused sharply, plus I don't have the remote yet so I think I was getting some vibration from the shutter.

Processing was resize + unsharp mask, plus I enhanced the Jupiter pixels to make it stand out more once it was resized.

Nice one Mike, learn to use the timer function (if you had it on a tripod)

Nice shot Mike...looks nice and fresh.

I do however see signs your camera is under emotional stress being homed in a Non-Lowepro bag.

Do you mean vibration from the mirror, in any case I dont think the remote will stop that its inherant in the camera. The remote is used to stop movement caused by pressing the shutter release with fat fingers.

On some cameras (Pentax for example) with the 2s timer the mirror locks up first then the 2sec countdown starts, this is designed to minimize vibrations caused by the mirror.

Phwoar, nice shot Mike. Its going to be hard going to keep up with you if thats the quality of the shots you are coming up with. Its going to be sunset shots for me, because.. well.. Im just too lazy to get up that early.

I might need a remote cable release as well. At the full 300mm it can get a little bit shakey even with a tripod (Id love to see some 500mm lenses!).

Yep, you're right there, a definite case of sulky shutter the result of imprisonment in the wrong bag. Mike, the good news is that a tripod, remote release and particularly mirror lock (works exactly as 33south described) will help soothe your new toy....

Nice shot Mike!

I was looking (make that drawling) at a Canon 20D yesterday in a camera shop in
Lismore. And I asked the bloke in there about the 20Da and he reckons they will be
out here next year. When I asked him the price he said it will be pretty much the
same as the 20D which was $2449.00 from memory (with lens kit). Anyone else know
about this as I thought they weren't releasing them in Australia.

I also asked him how come some products are only released in Japan and the US. His
reply was that they dont make huge amount of units. And the units they do sell
go to the bigger markets of Japan and the US, with no need to release else where.

regards,CS

Any of you guy's know about this?

Ahhhh - I think I've probably been fishing there - nice pic! Brings it all back. First place I've ever been in my life where I was the only thing un-natural in the immediate area. Obviously, not counting my brother that is, and obviously not this bit of the river, but still... awesome place. I wanna go back!!
