Sad but expected from the US govt. Hubble would not be a priority for them right now. Maybe a multi-billionaire business man will step in and put up the funds. Then again that could be even more disastrous. Imagine Bill Gates installing Windows on it!
If they're goin up to fit a propulsion module or two for controlled re-entry surely they'd bring her into the cargo bay of a shuttle for fitment, if so, why cant they just bring her home instead of re-releasing from the shuttle and blunging into the ocean like a spent fuel booster? They've got to come back anyway, might as well be with a full cargo bay.

Keeping the hubble in orbit probably equals the bill for every day spent in Iraq

Have to agree, this will become a political football at some point, and some baby kissing polly will get the credit for it. Sucks how the media and the average Joe are gullible enough to wear it. The media especially, need to get back to Journalism and not agenda setting. Hubble will be like the pheonix and rise from the ashes.
