Emoticons and thier use?

Howdy

Just an idea, but how about limiting the amount of emoticons per post? it can sometimes be distracting when reading through a post with millions of emoticons, and and i can sometimes take away from the original message, that someone is trying to convey.

Also, if they where limited, it might make loads times marginally faster, and it force people to think about thier use, and using the best emoticon for that particular expression.

just an idea

I'd like to see a few of the less popular ones replaced with other more usable ones.

They dont bother me at all, it was just a suggestion.

wouldnt that above link stop all use of them? i am not against them, indeed sometimes they are essential to know how to take the intent of the poster

I liken the excess use of emoticons to that of using all capitals when writing the text.
There is a time and a place for it.
For a Happy Birthday thread, yes, go for it. But when commenting on a more serious topic it would be inappropriate.
It's a matter of online etiquette. Some people follow the rules, others flaunt them.

I think that how each person expresses themselves is up to them within the terms of service of the site.

If we start to regulate use of emoticons, what might follow? More strict spelling requirements? The demand for accurate grammar? Who is going to “police” all this?

Personally I am happy for posters to use as few or as many emoticons as they feel the need to.

Methinks it is much ado about nothing; just my 2c worth as an under user of emoticons.

Cheers

Dennis

We all have our own way of expressing ourselves and I dont see emoticon usage as impacting on anyone elses enjoyment of the site.
I dont see a problem.

Well i love the emoticons i think they are a pleasent way to express the way your thinking in a nice way I think they soften the way some people might be misread in a thread just add an emoticon and its all good
They brighten up the place there is a box to tick in here somewhere if you choose not to view them

I hear ya Jen, and it wasnt meant as a personal attack on anyone.

But the option you mention means not seeing any of them, i dont mind seeing them at all, just not littered over every single post.
