Where can I get a RS232 USB convertor in Perth?

Hi guys! Long time no see~~

I bought a HEQ5 PRO in a Thursday before Easter holiday, which was in BTOW in Perth.

And I knew that I should get a RS 232- USB convertor to connect GOTO with PC, actualy, I cannot find any shop which sale RS232, I got a USB Serial Adapter, which called BEKLIN F5U109, I want to know can it connect GOTO with PC, like RS 232?

If no, I hope friends who from Perth can tell me that in Perth, which shop can I get a RS232 ?

Thanks!

That adaptor should work fine.
Check which "port" it gets assigned in hardware manager (windows)
If you change usb port it is connected to, the "com" port will change as well.

After asking my Chinese friends, they told me that it doesn't mean that I must choose RS232, I also can choose another adaptor, if it's 9 pins.

For my part, BEKLIN F5U109 is the only one that I found in Perth now, so I will try to use it to connect with my laptop.

Thanks!

My guess would be Altronics, Jaycar, Tandy or Dick Smith. One of them should have something.

cheers, Bird

If all else fails, search here:

Brilliant site for finding electronics/PC stuff, and comparing prices.

Belkin f5u109

Gday,
I have one of those belkin USB to serial adapters for use with my EQ6PRO mount and found it to be no good - reason being after about 10-15 mins of inactivity (IE the scope tracking an object) it will time out and you gotta go through resetting the mount and re-aligining again.

I bought another USB to serial adapter from jaycar and hey presto it worked all night just fine! You will also be able to get the nessesary extension cables for it there too

something about the belkin adapter is not right for astronomical use so steer clear from this one - it is also the most expensive one out there at about $79.95 i think. Jaycar version is about $39.95 so much better

Hope this helps,
Regards,
Grahame.

Try Computer Parts Land in Melbourne. http://www.cpl.net.au/ I bought mine for $19 and it works fine with my Nexstar. They advertise them as a USB to serial adapter. If you go to their web-site you will see a section called "Green Guide". This is their advert which gets published each week in the Radio/TV guide with the Melbourne "Age". You will find the adapter listed under "Controller & Acc." in the bottom right hand corner of page 1. There is a choice of either parallel ($27) or serial ($19). Their email address is cplnott@cpl.net.au Tel: 03 8542 8688.

Thank you guys!

For summarising your suggestions, I'll go to find real RS232 convertor for a long term and safe use when I am free~~~
