Help with XP Home SP3

My laptop has died as a result of a virus. I need some help to get it going.

Last week my AV software detected a virus, and advised me to reboot to clean the infected file. The infected file was basemfs32 (can't remember the extension). It appears the clean procedure was to simply erase the file.

On reboot, windows displays the splash screen then goes straight into the blue screen of death, missing basemfs32 file. (It makes no difference in safe mode or not).

The IT dude at work has been trying to fix but so far has drawn a blank. He doesn't have access to XP Home SP3 and the file apparently does not exist in XP pro SP2. We are trying to simply replace the missing file if possible rather than rebuild the lappy from scratch with the restore disk.

Is there anyone out there with XP Home Service Pack 3, who could do a search for the file basemfs32 ? If you have it (i.e. it is a genuine windows file and not part of the infection I had) could you please email me a copy and advise what directory(ies) it is located in?

If you don't have it, let me know as well please.

Now off to find the restore disk...

Thanks,

Al.

Hi AL

Aghh, so sorry to hear of your computer woes. I just searched on Win XP Pro SP3 and it came up blank.

Good luck with the fix.

Cheers

searched .... can't find it (in Pro), not in the hidden sys files.

Do a MANUAL RESTORE or REINSTALL WINDOWs.

When I installed SP3 (Pro on the Laptop and Home on the desktop) , I worked OK for me.

Finally located the Factory Default Image Backup disk...(whew)...

I'm not looking forward to going back to scratch, but at least the IT dude at work looks like being able to get my data off the drive before I start again. It'll just be installing and setting up all the software again...
