More Forum changes...

Signatures:
HTML/smilies/[img] tags can't be used in signatures. So if you just can't live without formatted and coloured text in your signature field, use the vb code (above the edit field) when editing your signature in your profile.

Attachments:
When attaching images, you can add 8 attachments per post. (8 should be enough?) We've yet to decide on a file size limit. At the moment it's 150KB per attachment, but your image can be physically as large as you like, seeing as all images are thumbnailed if they're bigger than 150 pixels.

Avatars:
It's been a while since the 80x80 max avatar size limit was 'recommended'. So if you still haven't changed it, sorry but i'm going Nazi over this week and modify your avatar for you as I get a chance.
(Note: Currently there's a bug in the forum where all avatars end up with a .gif extension even though it may be a jpg or png. We're working on it.)

EDIT: All oversized avatars have now been resized or cropped to 80x80 max. Even Astrobelle. If the only copy of your avatar was on iceinspace and you want the original, let me know.

TODO: probably a night-vision red theme that you'll be able to select between it and the default style, so that you're not blinded if you happen to browse the forums after looking through an eyepiece for two hours.

Probably more changes to come but they'll be trivial. This is pretty much how the forum will stay unless anyone can suggest anything they might want. The forum is cleaner, easier to read and navigate and faster than the old one was, anyway.

Mojo could we have the "mark forums read" link that was at the bottom of the new posts listing back? It was a handy place for it (saves having to scroll back to the top of the list when finished).

Looking good!

Tom.

I dont see why not. How about the "Forum Tools" popout at the bottom of the page. Will that do?

I don't know if it's such a good idea to "Mark forums read" when browsing a specific forum.
How about "Mark this forum read".

I did not mean at the bottom of any particular forum, I was hoping you could put it at the bottom of the New Posts search result list.

We've yet to decide on a file size limit
We're open to a few suggestions on this - the 60k limit was for two reasons:
1) To keep the database size down
2) For dial-up users so the pages would load quicker if they had image attachments.

#1 isn't an issue now, as the attachments are stored on the filesystem.
#2 isn't an issue in the thread-view, as the images are showed as thumbnails, however generally you'd expect a lot of people to click the thumbnail to show the large version. We don't want dial-up users to have to wait minutes to show the large version of an image attachment.

So what i'm thinking, is the following:
- No dimension limits (eg: it can be 1024x800 as it's thumbnailed in thread-view)
- Size limit up to 100k for images, 500k for zip files
- Obviously it's still recommended to link to an offsite version if you want to show a 500k uncompressed image

Thoughts?

The 100k limit will mean the images don't need to be compressed as much when posting in the solar system/deepspace photography forums.

Nice one guys Terry, I like the idea of having the Forum tool bar from the top of the thread page at the bottom of the thread as well as the top. Maybe under "<< previous Thread - Next Thread >>". Starting to get OOS in my middle finger already using the scroll wheel on the mouse to get back to the top to click on "new Posts"
