M42 Orion Nebula Sydney (Additional Data)

November has delivered so far with 10 clear nights and seeing generally ok.( The most out of all months this year in Sydney with a week to go )
Captured more data on M42 last week to add to my existing image ( a total of 7 hours now over 3 nights )
Definitely some subtle improvements but there is a point of diminishing return especially with OSC under Bortle 7/8 skies ( A Mono and 3nm filters, totally different story I suspect regarding data )

Managed to expose more of the Trap without short subs and fiddling around with Masks and Laying etc… ( Startools is magic )

Really get the most out of Spatially Variant PSF Deconvolution ( SV Decon ) , brilliant module and I believe Ivo is working on a further improvement for version 9 where sampling stars will be easier.

6” f6 GSO Bintel Newt
Skywatcher EQ6-R pro mount
ZWO 2600MC cooled to -10C , Gain 100
TS GPU coma corrector
Antlia ALPT OSC 5nm Duoband NB filter
142 x 3 min dithered guided subs
40 x 3 Flats ( new flats each night )
60 x Bias
EQMOD, Stellarium, APT
PHD2 Multistar guiding ( 0.55 to 0.65 arc sec total )
Stacked in DSS ( multiple nights stacking using reference frame )
Processed in Startools V1.8 Compose OSC Linear data sets

Synthetic Luminance version
Some OSC SHO versions using matrix

Thanks for looking

Hi Martin,

It’s coming along. It’s good to see you’ve had some clear skies finally.

There’s so much more to be had in the black areas of your image. Maybe you could try gathering the same amount of time in broadband then bring the two sets together?. There’s a wealth of dust lanes not captured with the narrowband filter. Also the gases surrounding M42 are quite expansive. With your field of view there should be very little black at all.

Cheers

Ryan

Thanks for your comments
Well received
Good point about adding Wideband to the existing Narrowband image but under my skies it’s an absolute “noise a thon” even with 60 sec subs. I’d have to take 10 to 15 hours worth to make it half worthwhile. Under darker skies it would be a much easier exercise and more successful I’d say
Still good point

Cheers

Sadly LP is a challenge many of us have to face but you’ve got to play the hand you’ve been dealt. If 15 hrs is what it takes, you’re nearly half way there. There’s some great imagers on here that image very successfully from similar skies to yours and mine.

Cheers

Nice job Martin! I agree that there’s probably some detail lurking in those shadows but I also feel your pain all too well with the LP! It’s great you’ve still been pumping out some great images while up in Sydney which is a testimony to your skill and perseverance!!
