Thumbs up Jupiter + Triple Moon Animation!

Hi all

(warning: 2.2mb animated gif)
Jupiter + Triple Moon Animation

Here's the 23-frame animation resulting from my Friday morning session on the 23rd March 2007 in superb seeing (8.5/10).

Ganymede and Europa are in transit at the bottom (North) of Jupiter, while Io pokes out right at the end on the right (East) limb near the GRS.

The very first frame is the worst of the lot, and there are a few "not as sharp" ones in there but the majority are very consistent with a few exceptional ones.

I love watching Ganymede and Europa move across Jupiter - they really give a 3D perspective and really do appear to float above the planet. There's detail on ganymede in practically every frame as well, even when in front of Jupiter.

A lot of work went into this but it's turned out great. I'll post the best individual frames later today or tomorrow morning.

Taken with a 12" newt + EQ6, DMK21AF04 + 5x powermate. All processing done in Registax, AstraImage and Photoshop, with pre-processing done using virtualdub and ppmcentre (PCFE). About half of the images are made with just RGB data, and the other half with LRGB.

Thanks for looking. Comments/questions welcome.

Good work, Mike.

Yeah. I noticed the same 3D effect happening with my animation when looking at Ganymede transiting the face of Jupiter.

It's very cool.

Some of your best work

What an excellent animation Mike - a really fascinating insight into the dynamics of this amazing system. Well done and thanks for sharing the extraordinary results of what must have been both a marathon capture and processing endeavour.

Cheers

Dennis
