Had some family down at our pad down the south coast so I dragged the 10” dob out and showed them some high mag shots of the moon. Also took some iPhone shots to share with them. I didn’t want to set up the 6” scope and the HEQ5 mount to image with the DSLR as the night was getting late
10” bintel dob
13mm ethos eye piece
2x TV Powermate
Magnification 193x
Moon at 30 deg
Poor seeing as a lot of local smoke haise around and dew
Martin that is really amazing.
How are you doing this?
Do you hand hold the phone or do does it have a little mount or something?
Forget the zwo I should get an Iphone
Alex
Yes you can capture some incredible lunar images with your iPhone but it takes a lot of patience and steady hands ( I don’t use a holder )
I suppose what makes it possible is the Televue Delos and Ethos eye pieces I use which have 15mm and 20mm eye relief. I could not image the same with Plössl eye pieces
It can take many snaps over 5 to 10 minutes to capture 1 good image as the images drifts in and out of view, kidney beans , blacks out etc...with the slightest movement of your hands, plus you have to reset and nudge the scope back into the desired FOV ( not an easy task but doable)
I feel it’s not real astrophotography ( kinda cheating a bit but it does take some degree of skill )
Anyway I was to tired to set up my Astro rig for the visiting family so just used the iPhone with the 10” dob like I did when I started this hobby. They were extremely impressed and could believe the detail ( most of them had never seen the moon through a telescope or an image of it that close)
